Monday Linkspam is cloudy and grey

Some rules for freezing food.

Academichic has a roundup of recommended interview attire, for those of you looking for ideas for that sort of thing.

Oh, what a surprise: Facebook is violating users' privacy again. ::yawn::

Pro Publica has a rundown on the players in the foreclosure scandal.

Someone very smart collected everything Ta-Nehisi Coates has written on the Civil War and put it together in one file. Now that's a public service for you.

I updated Carpetbaggers last night, and while I'm sitting here at my desk, purportedly doing the things I'm paid to (erm, interspersed with compiling linkspam), I keep thinking about the next scene to write, and the one after that, and the thematic beats I need to hit, and what about the battle scene, and and and and... Oy. This story is eating my brain.

My universes are colliding: one of my climbing partners just announced she bought a netbook this week so she could spend her time at the dog park writing a science fiction novel. ... okay, then.

To be fair, for all I know she's a brilliant writer. It's just not something we've ever talked about, and I didn't even know she read science fiction.

Thoughts on Wiscon
I noticed the SF3 post about Moon last Friday, and thought, "Hmm, that looks strangely inconclusive." I said as much to some folks (including Vito) at a gathering on Saturday, but I was still hoping the concomm would follow SF3's lead and, if not formally disinvite Ms. Moon, strongly encourage her to find a previously-unknown prior engagement.

No such luck. At least, not so far. It appears that for some people on the concomm, it's more important to recognize Elizabeth Moon for writing strong women than it is to recognize that she has said some rather horribly bigoted things which offended many members of the Wiscon community, some or many of whom also write strong women. I suspect it has to do with the prioritization of politesse over justice, myself.

Nick Mamatas has an analysis I haven't seen before in this particular context, but it reminds me quite strongly of some of the discussions we had last year at Wiscon about the demographics of RaceFail. The dispute about Ms. Moon isn't affirmational vs. transformational fandom, I don't think--but it may well have more to do than we realize about generational differences in how the community operates.

As for me, I'm on the fence about attending. I have enjoyed my Wiscons very much, and I hoped to attend this year, but if most of the people I would like to see are not attending, that's a strike against. And for financial reasons, it may just make sense to have Fogcon be my one con this year anyway--for one thing, I wouldn't have to fly anywhere.

Speaking of which, Fogcon programming suggestions are open. Hmm. (Given who one of the GOHs is, it might be highly ironic to run a panel on How Not To Be an Asshole on the Internet. *grins*)
