I know some folks on my flist really enjoy SGU (Stargate: Universe). I fully support your interest in the show and ability to enjoy it! I also recommend that you not follow the link I am about to provide.

And yet based on her review, I'm pretty sure she enjoyed SG-1 and SGA both rather more than SGU. I wouldn't really claim, myself, that SG-1 was brilliant, except very occasionally (and often accidentally). What was engaging for me was the characters and the premise, which I found just really likeable, as Katie once said.

I've been reading these posts thanks to POG who put in some links, and it's been interesting. I watched just a few SGU before quitting on it--too dreary, I couldn't make myself watch even for a glimpse of Jack (well, that's why I did watch, but I soon regretted it.)

I agree with her criticism of the writers/showrunners of SGU, yet I also take exception, as I loved SG1 and often enjoyed SGA (though never with the same intensity, it was Jack O'Neill and Team that kept me glued to SG1), so I resented her negativity about those shows.

What SGU I've seen is the sort of thing that could be better, in the hands of better writers, but is actually just so dour and determinedly unpleasant that I tuned out. It's like there's no in-between: you got your faintly-silly OTT and you got your Grim Darkness and you don't got nothing in-between. With nobody particularly likable or even cheerful, I'm not sure how the characters have managed not to kill each other.

(In re Grim Darkness, well, there's a reason so many BSG fans gave up before the end!)

You know, I believe that this is the very first time that a link to a post of mine has been preceded with a content warning. To be honest, I'm surprised it hasn't happened before.

I agree so much with that article. I flat out do not like SGU's characters. And as a character-driven viewer, unlikeable characters are the kiss of death, I don't care how good the show might be otherwise. Not that SGU is in any way good. Conversely, I'll watch absolute dreck if I like the characters.
