Mark Twain's uncensored autobiography is
finally being published. That looks like it would be fun to read.
Here's some silly: Eclipse with
lolcats. Hee.

crypto has come up with a third fannish mode of discourse, which he calls "parasocial fandom", distinct from the "affirmational" and "transformational" modes of fannish involvement that
obsession_inc and
damned_colonial have laid out. Crypto talks about parasocial fandom
on the TWC blog, in the context of The Hills. Interesting stuff.

Hal Duncan has a long and thoughtful essay on his blog
here; it's purportedly about Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Last Airbender's whitewashing, but it's really about cultural appropriation--or as he terms it, "lifestyle theft". He lays out a typology that distinguishes between cultural sharing, cultural theft, cultural murder, and cultural slander. It's quite a dense discussion, but definitely worth reading, although I think he rather fails to stay as non-academic/jargony as he says he wants to be (anyone using "semiotics" is not really speaking to the layperson). Good stuff in the comments, too (aside from one entirely predictable violation of
Moff's Law).
Today is the birthday of
Charlotte Perkins Gilman, who wrote The Yellow Wallpaper.
And
oursin has a good post today on the fallacy that
if it's entertaining, it can't be deep. I really do need to hunt me down some Naomi Mitchison.

I found myself looking at the latest anonymeme yesterday, no, I don't know why either. (Clearly I had to punish myself for having a lovely time with fangirls over the weekend.) And the worst thing about those anonymous hate memes is that they destroy your trust in your fellow fans. Because if there are actually people who will say such things publicly about other fans, fans who produce great vids or fic or book reviews or run cons or compile recs pages or run fic challenges--or struggle for social justice!--I have to wonder, are any of those anonymice on my flist?
And I don't like the way that makes me feel.
::sigh::
Also, I have a headache and no ibuprofen. Must go scavenge from coworkers. Also, why am I wheezing?
ETA: Since apparently this post has been linked widely, I would like to ask that before you comment on the anonymeme issue, you read the other comments that have been posted before you. Also, as of the evening of 10 July, I am no longer replying to comments on this; I don't really have anything else to say on the matter.
