A status report on Steven Brust's Firefly novel: at the 50% mark (I had to go to sleep), it's very good indeed. Set before Serenity, no Book or Inara (I would have liked to see Book), fun plot and the voices are perfect. It doesn't read like fanfiction, though: definitely reads like a tie-in. Rotating pov, introduction of the characters in the prologue, etc. But it's very good so far. I shall finish it tonight.
That meme's going around again, although most people seem to be playing it for laughs.
I suspect most readers of this LJ already know my unpopular opinions: that I'm not as into romance as 3/4 of fandom is, that I dislike the near-ubiquitous fetishization of incest in fandom, that I don't think either SGA or SPN is The Best Show Evah OMG. I think John Winchester was a pretty good dad given the circumstances, and I find Rodney McKay at best tolerable. I'm bored by a lot of AUs, I am both baffled and squicked by RPF, and I would appreciate it if more fans would keep their sexual fantasies under flock. And I don't think writing slash is inherently a transgressive or political act.
But here's my Really Unpopular Opinion: I don't think Written by the Victors is all that great. Heresy, I know, but there you go. Feel free to kick me out of the fannish clubhouse.
But then, as you know, I'm a
fannish statistical anomaly.
