OTW links and some meta on "Tracks"

So OTW got Boing-Boinged. And it also got Scalzi'd. (Or maybe it should be "Whatevered"?) Cory was very generous in his comments (I had no idea he was the first donor to OTW!); Scalzi is sensible, but dubious about the long-term benefit--in fact, he thinks OTW may hurt more than it helps. He however does agree with me that gen fic is actually at more risk for being found infringing than, say, crack!addled AU slash.

That said, I'm consistently baffled at the number of people who think that allowing fans to be creative is the same thing as letting them make money off the producer's creation.

I don't want to make money off my fic. I just want to be able to post it without feeling like I'm at risk for a C&D. I'd like to keep watching vids, and for my friends who vid to continue posting them publicly without getting them taken down every three days by the producers.

Nobody is in this for the money, and the ones who are? Are generally misinformed about how the system works.

Thus endeth your meta for the day.

Hey, new SPN tonight! Yay!

Also, I am just overwhelmed at the incredibly positive response to Her Tracks Are On the Land. Honestly, I really thought it would appeal to about six people, given that it's a gen story with an OFC narrator and hardly any Winchesters at all.

On the other hand, Karen Harrison is, well, she's one of us, isn't she? She's not a Mary Sue, but she's representative of much of fandom: she's a middle-aged, middle-class white woman, who works as a professional in a job that pays pretty well but not great (and is in the public interest). She's single but sociable, with hobbies she enjoys (she's a birder on the weekends). And she loves her nephews and wants to take care of them--rather like all of SPN fandom loves the boys and wants to take care of them. (Err, although for the fans, values of take care of I suspect include covering them with chocolate syrup and licking it off very slowly.) And Karen's not competition the way an OFC in a romantic relationship with one of the boys would be.

It's been an interesting experience, and I'm just really grateful y'all like the story so much. Many thanks.
