Haven't done a proper update in a while, mostly because nothing much has been going on.
I'm back at work after the holidays, spending a lot of time being bored while I'm waiting for the semester to start up and the students to come back and start invading my office.
Today I went to the mall to buy food. I ended up going everywhere but to the supermarket, buying a new winter coat that I (hopefully) won't be needing for at least another three months, new pumps, a summer dress and lots of wine. Lol, I will probably have to return to the food shop tomorrow when all the other stores are closed.
When I haven't been working and shopping for things I don't need, I have been watching lots of movies and tv shows.
1. SHERLOCK
kajodfjfkasjfdiajfak!!! I have already watched all three episodes twice and pre-ordered the dvd - that's how much I loved it. It's an extremely well-done and well-acted modern reinvention of Sherlock Holmes which felt genuinely like Sherlock Holmes to me (which the 2009 movie didn't -imo). I loved all the references to Conan Doyle's stories - I haven't read any Sherlock Holmes-stories in a long time, but I'm pretty sure there were lots more than the ones I picked up on as well. The second episode was a little weaker than the first and the third, but I really liked Watson's girlfriend (which apparently not a lot of people did?) - she attacked a ninja with a stick! That's badass! Also, not sure about Moriarty - I can't seem to make up my mind if I hated him or if I can get used to him.
2. INCEPTION
I watched it last week-end, and it is a brilliant, brilliant movie. Very clever plot, but idk, the characters did not resonate with me the way they seem to have done with every one else. I liked Cobb, Ariadne and Saito, but I'm pretty meh about the rest of them. So I really, really liked the movie, but I didn't LOVE it. I don't feel like getting into the fandom (same with Sherlock actually - I'm still all about Star Trek, lol), but I am enjoying reading some meta and in-depth analyses, because the movie and the concept intrigued me even if the characters didn't.
3. EXTRAS
My flatmate and I just watched both seasons back-to-back, and this show was pretty much hit and miss for me. Some episodes were absolutely hilarious, some were acutely embarrassing - which is what I've come to expect from Ricky Gervais...
4. YOUNG VICTORIA
A great period drama! I'm a royal genealogy and history geek, so yeah I liked it a lot! (no surprise there :D ) The historical inaccuracies were minor (as far as I can tell), which is always a plus, and the actors actually resembled the persons they were portraying. And, of course, it was a beautiful love story. Will probably re-watch soon.
5. STAR TREK: VOYAGER
I'm not even half-way through the first season yet, but I am loving it so far. I really like TNG as well (I'm up to Season 4), but I love the tension and the dynamics between the crew members in Voyager and overall I think the plots are better developed and more interesting in it, particularly compared to TOS. I don't think I'll love any other Trek series quite as much as TOS, but Voyager's got a lot of potential and I am really excited to see more of it.
