Yesterday, we talked about feminist video art and watched a lot of feminist videos from the 70's... very... um... interesting. The first video was a 10 minute excerpt about different women talking about orgasms. I guess it was a great breakthrough back then since people just didn't make documentaries on such topics.
Then there was a video of two women making out (tongue and all) and licking each other all over the place... I think it was 17 minutes of that... all the while the only "sounds" are broadcasts of different radio shows that were very demeaning to women. I guess the message there was that on the screen you would see these two "empowering" women doing their own thing while you hear the masculine society's view of women in the background... overall message-- "MEN SUCK" (lol).
The next video was very sad. It was a documentary on this Italian grandmother from who immigrated to America and got married. She talked about how her husband beat her and made her "obey" him and how he forced her to have an abortion at one point but she didn't want to... he forced her to have one anyways and as a result, she got really really sick but he wouldn't take her to the doctor until she fainted and started bleeding... then at the end, she was like, "But remember, you have to always love your man... no matter what, always love your man." Ugh... it was frustrating because she was getting treated like crap but was brought up to just take it because she was a woman.
So I saw my share of penises a couple of weeks ago, this time, I got to see a vagina... well, she didn't really want us to see the video of the live birth, but she had to fast forward past it and in the end, you see this baby coming out... but it's not like Sally and I didn't see a woman actually giving birth to a baby when we made the mistake of going to see Dr. T and His Women. (Yeah, for those of you curious of what that looks like, go rent that movie and then fast forward it all the way until right before it ends.)
