~Chapter Forty-One: Ring Or Not~
“That was worth coming out for,” Evan smiled as he watched the carriage with Brett and Kaitlynn head off for its venture before the people, “I mean, it’s nice to see that they can finally be together as man and wife.” Neither seemed to blame Ted or even circumstances especially given the nature of them that they had had to wait so long to be married but Evan was sure that they had to be frustrated… in their position he could assume that he would be pretty frustrated too. Only… he wasn’t frustrated. Not in their sense; he and Randy had already experienced one another, were as close as two men like themselves could be, but… he was frustrated now because he was still so invalided so many weeks on and he couldn’t experience Randy the way he once had. He was seeing a new side of him that wasn’t bad, not that, but he did miss the way they had been.
“Yeah… though I’m surprised there wasn’t much more wine drinking happening.”
“That’s for the after-party,” Evan laughed lightly, “Imagine how things would go if they drank during the ceremony!”
“Sounds like it would be a damn sight more interesting to me,” Randy smirked and Evan snorted lightly, causing him to arch a brow as though daring Evan to explain what he found so funny. He seemed to forget even now that his younger lover had never been one to cow-tow before him. When Evan seemed in no hurry to heed his cue he prompted, “Yes?”
“Oh stop it… I saw that little smile on your face when they got their kiss sealing them as man and wife.”
“I did no such thing!” Randy growled and narrowed his eyes though the motion was far from threatening where Evan was concerned; he’d seen Randy at his most frightened and his most fearsome, so he was hardly frightened of him now. He’d never really been scared of Randy in the technical sense either; he was just a man smart enough to know not to underestimate him, even if he was someone that seemed to hold a preferential treatment where the taller man was concerned.
“You did. You did and I saw it and don’t worry I won’t tell anyone but- hey, hey, no!” he began to giggle as Randy traced a finger down his spine, following the line and curve where Evan was laid on his good side, scarred wounded side up to Randy’s line of view. The motion was gentle enough for him to feel but not tickly enough that he would end up flailing all over the place and perhaps doing himself some harm.
“If I hear you tell anyone that I’ll spank your backside until you go red raw.”
“Mhm, sounds promising-“Evan started and then winced when his side twinged; he was in little danger of the wound opening up now, unless he did something very very strenuous (and he couldn’t help but think that Justin was alluding to things of a… personal nature, when he’d said that. He did think it by tone but Randy’s expression at the time had helped) but he was still sensitive to sudden movements. Immediately Randy hand retracted and Evan could have kicked himself. “I’m not hurting,” he said immediately but Randy was still frowning gently down at him, fingers just resting on the edge of the wound.
“I… Still think about how close I came, you know? I could have lost you so easily… I mean, I’ve seen it before a lot on the battlefield, known a lot of good men who’ve died in battle and what we took part in one a battle… but the prospect of losing you made me want to curse Zeus for ever having us come here.” Even though there their relationship had been able to progress there in a way that it never would have back in Cody’s family’s kingdom.
“But I’m here now, I haven’t gone anywhere.”
“But you could have.”
“But I didn’t,” Evan implored, sitting up carefully and placing a hand on Randy’s chest over where his heart beat strong and steady underneath his palm, “But I didn’t,” he repeated, “And we’re both here and everything’s alright now and we’re together.”
“That’s true,” he quirked a small smile and rested a hand over Evan’s, leaning in and pressing their lips together. Kissing, sadly, was the only extent of how far Randy would go these days but Evan knew he was lucky to even get that considering it had taken a good two weeks before Randy would touch him for any reason other than to help him bathe, or to give him his medicine to his wound.
“I knew weddings would bring out the best in you.”
“Shut your cheeky mouth, minx.”

The food was plentiful and the wine was flowing as fast as the slaves could pour it as everyone in court gathered once more for the celebratory feast (one of several over the next few days, Alex had informed Cody in absent, shy conversation when they had met up for another of their writing sessions, Alex having been reliably informed by the slaves in turn; he still seemed to be accepted and treated a little more openly by them more so than anyone else even if, at least there, he was no longer a slave) that marked the end of the first night Kaitlynn and Brett had together both as man and wife and king and queen.
“I don’t envy their evening performance…” Mike muttered to his right and Cody turned his head to glanced across at his friend.
“What do you mean?” maybe he was naïve but in truth Cody would have thought that they would have been… looking forward to their first night together. When they could actually be together in a way that wouldn’t cause vicious whispers or raised eyebrows, or to cause something that would be considered very bad out of wedlock, especially for a royal couple. Even if they did get married afterwards the damage would have been done.
“Well,” Mike looked at him as though he were a bit slow and then enunciated, “Did no one tell you what would happen on Dustin’s wedding-night when he was married?”
“Mike, I know what sex is-”
“I’m not talking about the sex, Cody-“Mike pinched him subtly underneath the table after lowering his voice (Mike might have a big mouth but he at least had moments of common-sense and knew not what to say or when not to say it) to continue, “The first night… you have watchers in the room.”
Cody choked on his wine and Ted turned towards him, surprised and amused by the reaction, “Have you have too much to drink?” he teased before then catching sight of the flush on his lover’s face, “Have I missed something?” he asked as he leant around Cody and addressed Mike who seemed torn between annoyed surprise at the fact that Cody had never actually put two and two together about these things since he was a member of the royal household but at the same time it made perfect sense… Cody wasn’t deliberately selfish and ignorant about these things; he’d just never acted in a manner that encouraged anyone to tell him about these things. After all, given the age-difference between brothers Cody was still only quite young when Dustin was betrothed and then finally married.
“Cody was unaware of the added element to Brett and Kaitlynn’s night together tonight,” Mike was careful to keep a low and polite tone since Kaitlynn was only on Ted’s other side and though there was a lot of cheering, singing and chatter from the assembled guests there was still every chance that she might hear them… Mike had noticed that she seemed to see and hear things that many women didn’t.
Ted seemed bemused for a moment and then his eyes widened, “Ah-” he smiled at Cody and wished he could lean over and kiss him. Honestly, given the things that they had done together it was funny almost that he needed this kind of thing spelled out to him but at the same time it was so very Cody and so adorable that Ted just wished he could kiss him right then and there before everyone.
“You’re laughing at me,” Cody accused the blonde.
“I’m not, I swear!”
“Yes you are I can tell,” a pout was beginning to grow and Ted subtly shifted in his chair, praying to Hera that Cody stopped pouting like that quickly because otherwise he was going to be driven to distraction and he didn’t need that. They were together not too long ago and yet he could feel himself stirring again at the thought of those pouting lips and that perfect mouth and what they could do to him. He cleared his throat softly and then offered Cody a sweet smile that he hoped would appease his irritation.
“We’re not laughing… I just, you have a married brother, they’ve been attempting to find you a bride, I would have thought that you would have known how these things work.”
“I know how they work!” he insisted and Ted ignored the sinking feeling in his stomach at the thought of Cody being educated on how to be with a woman… even though he was well-aware that such an eventuality had never happened.
“Cody… What we’re getting at is that people are going to be watching Brett and Kaitlynn as they sleep with one another the first time, to make sure that they actually do sleep together-”
“But surely they can’t watch--!”
“They watch from behind a curtain,” Ted added on when he realised the misunderstanding that Cody was beginning to draw for himself.
“But-That’s embarrassing.”
“Correct, but necessary. They will be expected to have heirs,” there was a sympathy in Mike’s voice as he spoke though; he was certainly pleased that his having sex with someone didn’t need to be witnessed for the sake of some kind of successional line.
“I don’t think I could do it.”
“After the amount they’ve been waiting I’d be amazed if they couldn’t.”
“Hey, that’s my brother you’re talking about.”
Mike toasted him with a glass of wine and then turned towards Alex who was apparently speaking to him. Cody then turned back to Ted and quirked a tiny smile as he leant into his ear so that they wouldn’t be overheard, “For the first time I’m almost glad that you and I can’t be married in the traditional sense of the word.”
“Oh, so you considered us married in the untraditional sense?” Ted found he didn’t mind that idea much.
Cody tipped him a wink, “You’re all mine, Ted, ring or no ring, and if you think anything or anyone will come between us now then you’ve another thing coming.” Cody knew that that kind of sentiment was usually ‘famous last words’ but this time he was confident; there was no threat to any of them anymore, they were safe and free to live as they wanted to live. Together, without interruption.
