Natsuki was usually a fairly patient person. (Kind of.) Not particularly in relation to the specifics of human interaction and other menial social issues, but that was a different story all together. Something like this, she could handle. Something like this, should not have possibly made her so incredibly irritable. But damn it. Really.
She hated being short sometimes.
It had been bad enough being told that she had to make up for her lackadaisical attendance record with more interactive representation in class, but all that make-up schoolwork was a different matter. A different matter that she hardly appreciated. Which, of course, was the very reason she was spending a cool, bright Saturday in the library instead of out driving her motorcycle on the highway by the shore. The lack of freedom counted as a mild irritating factor, but her inability to reach the necessary books on the top shelf was really, really beginning to tick her off. That was her excuse, at least.
She had spent the good last few ten minutes or so staring rebelliously up at that book, as if her glaring would scare the stupid object off the shelf and into her hands. Unfortunately, the law of physics did not quite work that way (even though she was rather tempted to summon Duran to retrieve it for her--while blasting a few things to bits in the process--but she was Kuga Natsuki and Kuga Natsuki did not lose her cool like that) and the book remained where it was. Her pride prevented her from asking for help, so after a long, insufferable few minutes, she began to warily eye the bottom shelf to assess whether or not it was safe for her to step on. It was just a little bit higher, but still out of reach, that annoying book.
There was suddenly a (familiar) hand. A hand that reached up above her just those few extra unreachable centimeters and edged the book out of the shelf and held it loosely between elegant fingers.
Natsuki knew those hands.
"Why, Natsuki. You're very diligent today, aren't you?"
Natsuki knew that voice too.
Shizuru smiled her trademark serene smile and lightly tapped the other girl's head with the book she had just retrieved. Chuckling quietly as Natsuki made a noise of disgruntled gratitude, Shizuru handed the shorter girl the book before tilting her head elegantly to push a few strands of hair behind her ear. Brightly, she said, "You can ask for help anytime, you know." She paused for a moment before even more cheerfully continuing, "But only me, of course.
"I would have eventually got it," Natsuki muttered under her breath, ignoring the faint tingling warmth puddled at her cheeks. Clearing her throat, she said a bit louder, "You're just lucky you're tall, Shizuru."
There was something about the way that Shizuru suddenly beamed at that comment that immediately made Natsuki ten times more awkwardly uncomfortable than she had already been.
"That's right," Shizuru agreed readily, nodding slightly with her pleasant tea time smile still in place. "Height does have its advantages, doesn't it?"
Her hand that had previously been so helpful suddenly dropped down and grabbed Natsuki's--ahem.
The dark hair girl immediately let out a slight screeched (a dignified one of course, as Kuga Natsuki was always dignified) and turned an impressive shade of crimson. Thank god no one else was in the library. "S-Shizuru!"
Smiling brightly, said girl simply lifted a finger and stated informatively, "Natsuki, you've heard of the height rule, haven't you?"
And again, Natsuki cursed those extra few centimeters she lacked.
