“Beyond the mountain is another mountain” was sighed out into the warm, embracing darkness of a Haitian night, by a girl, of only 16. The older man whom she had just done business with slowly pulled on his shoes and winked at her. She got a sudden chill, and it slowly crept up her spine. He threw her 15 gourde onto the warm ground and strolled out of the pale moonlight laughing, becoming smaller and smaller, until she could no longer see the man who had robbed her of her innocence. She sat in the darkness and pulled her knees to her chest, her tears were slowly falling from her brown eyes. She embraced herself in her own arms as she had done many times before when she felt the warmth of another’s breath upon her neck. She quickly turned around and saw the face of a young woman who’s face had been weathered with many emotional triumphs. The woman held out her arms and embraced the girl. She held onto her as if the winds were blowing harshly enough to knock her over.
