Amores, on Thursday I am participating in a debate about the movie Scarface - a movie I find terribly racist but almost too boring to hate with any real passion. To sum it up, basically I think it is a totally stupid movie and I don't get its appeal, especially to people who have had plenty of exposure to more interesting knock-offs, including the video game Grand Theft Auto, in the few decades since it premiered. So, obviously, I am the CON side of the debate. But I am having a hard time imagining the PRO side, and therefore am woefully unprepared for the debate. Please help. Why does anyone like this movie, for real? Besides those people who think the line "say hello to my little friend" is horribly witty? Was it some kind of cinematic breakthrough I should know about? And, even so, why should I care? When I was a highschool debater, I always argued for the other side so that I would know every argument and counterargument. But really... I'm stumped on this one. And, it doesn't help that this is supposed to be a lively, funny, no-pulled punches kind of debate - so I'm encouraged to be aggressive, taunting, and a little mean. Which is totally not my style. Plus, in my current condition I am prone to tears. And falling asleep. Should have said a big N-O to this gig!
