Uchiha Sasuke suffers.
Perhaps his older brother is still the main cause of his affliction; the once lone Avenger hasn’t completely learned to accept that Itachi is still somewhere out there, perfectly healthy and well. Maybe his past misadventures with Orochimaru contribute to his inward difficulties; no one seems to know, not even him.
He doesn’t express his pain openly, but it is overly obvious to those around him. The uncomfortable shifting around his bed in the middle of the night, the frantic darting of black eyes that are seen when his new wife lights a lamp and eyes him in vague concern; they both seem to be the most evident to the ones who see him the most.
When he is fully awake, this only reminds him that there is something about the married life that just doesn’t suit him. Perhaps it is the fact that he’d been forced into this marriage by some stupid contract between his village and the former Kazekage. Maybe it is the fact that he had to become accustomed to sharing his bed with a snappy, bad-tempered woman rather quickly. He doesn’t know for sure, but he likes to think that she also adds to his problems.
But when said spouse holds his shuddering form in his arms after these frightening spells, giving him those embraces he feels like complaining about (but never has the strength to do so), and kisses him against the forehead, his suffering ameliorates just a little bit.
And most of the times, that’s just what he needs.
