Sarah couldn’t quite believe what was happening as she bit into the peach and realised Hoggle had betrayed her, the person she’d trusted most in this whole Labyrinth. He’d actually done as Jareth had asked and tried to stop her reaching the Goblin Castle. “how could you?” she muttered sleepily as the images in front of her blurred and changed.
She smiled as she heard the familiar music, it was just like that that her music box played, the one her mother had given her. She twirled dreamily and grinned as she looked down at her beautiful ball gown. “A true Princess,” Jareth said softly, coming up behind her, “or should I say Queen?”
Sarah turned quickly and smiled up at him, “Not a queen yet,” she replied her tone full of sadness, “not until you ask me the question.”
Jareth grinned down at her wickedly, knowing full well that whether this was real or not it was what she wanted. “And what question might that be, Sarah?” he asked as he spun her around the suddenly crowded ballroom
She pouted up at him, “you know!”
He chuckled lightly, and produced a silver ring from nowhere and held it out to her in his gloved hand.
Sarah’s eyes widened as she looked down at it, almost holding her breath as she waited for him to say the words.
Sensing her eagerness he closed his hand and started to dance her around the room again, rather enjoying this little game, he could make her beg here, he was the one with all the power, as it should be.
Suddenly Sarah’s eyes opened as she began coughing, everything coming back into sharp focus, she looked around for Jareth before her mind caught up with the sight and she noticed the poisoned peach still clutched in her hand. She closed her eyes almost willing herself back to the dream, despite how wrong she knew this was, she had to save Toby she knew that and yet she couldn’t help but think of how nice the dream had been, the dancing, the ring and him, Jareth. She wanted to go back there, to hear him ask the question, to answer it and to feel him slip the ring over her finger. “Hoggle?” she said feebly, holding out the fruit to him “I think maybe you should take this back now.”
Up in his castle, Jareth smirked into the crystal, so that was how it was, was it? She really did want to be his queen, even after he’d taken her baby brother, this was something he could work with, he could actually win using this knowledge.
