Author's Notes: Based on every RPG Paige and Geoff have been in, basically an AU between them leaving Fandom Towers and arriving at Haurvatat.
They walk down the road, holding each other’s hands tightly, the weight of their bags heavy on their shoulders. She’s lost track of how long they’ve been walking for but the dull ache in her legs tells her it’s been a long time. She isn’t used to walking like this, not like Geoff is and she wishes she had her car still, then maybe they’d be where ever the hell it was they were going already. “I need a break,” she tells him letting go of his hand and collapsing against the side of the dirt track, the bag slipping from her shoulder as she looks up at him. “Just for a minute,” she assures him, though her tone is obviously tired and he can tell from the look in her eye all she wants to do is sit here forever.
“It’ll be dark soon,” he tells her as he sits beside her, putting his bag at his side and wrapping his arm around her, pulling her close to him.
She rests her head against his chest and nods. “I know, I know, it’s just...we’ve walked so far and I’m so tired.”
Dipping his head he kisses her head and squeezes her gently. “I’m sure it can’t be much further, and it’ll be worth it. I’d walk to the ends of the Earth to be with you, my love.”
Biting her lip she looks up at him and grins, his words giving her the strength she needs. “Come on then, we’ve come this far right?” She says, not just referring to the numbers of miles they’ve walked, but also to the years they’ve been apart, all the things they’ve been through to finally be together, without anything standing in their way.
Beaming down at her, he stands, picking up both of their bags and lugging them over his shoulder, he may be skinny but he’s strong. He’d have offered to carry her if he thought for a moment she’d agree, but he knows how stubborn she can be so the bags will have to do. He holds out his hand and pulls her from the ground, clearly a little too forcefully because she ends up pressed hard against his body. Casting her a wolfish grin he kisses her deeply just for a few moments before reluctantly pulling away. “If we don’t find somewhere before it gets dark we should sleep out here,” he tells her, clearly not all that into the idea, if it were just him it would be different but she deserves better than that.
“I think we’re close,” she replies, as they start to walk down the road again.
Suddenly the view around them changes, they’re no longer walking down the dirt road, but on cobbles and there are less trees, the place looks more like a village than the abandoned road they were on a moment ago. Neither of them should be surprised given everything that’s happened to them since they first met. “Geoff?” She stops and looks around, it looks like the pictures of England he’s shown her. “Are we, are we-” she’s not entirely sure how to ask the question.
He knows what she’s getting at of course because it looks familiar to him also, though at the same time not. “No, we’re not back in my time, I do think we might be in England though,” he interrupts, picking up speed slightly as buildings come into view in front of them.
She frowns, not that being back in 14th century London was where either of them really wanted to be, but it would be nice to know where they were. There’d been far too much randomly arriving in different times and places in their relationship already. “Least we won’t have to sleep outside,” she says gesturing in front of them to a large building that looks a lot like a hotel.
Right now he can think of nothing better than to climb into bed with her and sleep away the aches in his muscles and his speed picks up further until they’re at the hotel door. He opens it for them and moves across to reception handing Paige her bag again, since she’s the one that keeps hold of the money since he still finds it a little difficult to understand and of course there‘s that nasty gambling problem he has. “I was wondering if we might be able to rent a room, just for a night,” he tells the old fashioned looking man behind the counter, looking at Paige for confirmation that that’s how long they want to stay for.
Paige shrugs, no idea how long they should stay in the hotel for, obviously they don’t want to stay in the hotel for too long, ideally they’ll be able to find a house or apartment to themselves.
The man behind the counter smiles at the couple and looks at the reservations book in front of him. “Certainly, my dear. We’ve been expecting you actually,” he tells him running his finger down the columns. “Mr and Mrs Chaucer, correct?”
Paige and Geoff look at each other confusion clear in their eyes. It’s not something they’ve even spoken about and hearing themselves referred to as Mr and Mrs shocks them somewhat. “Um no actually, it’s Paige Matthews and Geoffrey Chaucer, we’re not married.” yet
He looks between the couple, blushing slightly at his mistake, obviously he’d looked a little far into the future. “Yes of course, I do apologise,” he say wincing slightly, hoping he hasn’t somehow affected their future by telling them this. “We do however have a room all ready for you, 414,” he continues waving a hand in the direction of the elevator behind them. “If there’s anything either of you need just call reception.”
They both nod a little blankly, their hands still fixed on what he’d called them, then turn to wait for the elevator. “That was weird, huh?” Paige says a little nervously, looking up at him.
He chuckles lightly and wraps his arm tightly around her. “A little,” he agrees. “Though I must admit it does have a certain ring to it, don’t you agree.”
Swallowing hard as the doors open she steps inside and rests her back against the mirrored wall her eyes fixed on him as his words repeat in her mind. “I um...I guess so,” she replies, not really sure what else to say. There’s lots she could say, but she’s so tired right now she can’t quite find any words that would make sense.
Stepping closer his arms wrap tenderly around her small frame and he looks at his reflection in the mirror, imagining asking her that question. “This is meant to be a new start for us, my lady,” he points out, looking back down her.
Resting her body against his she doesn’t speak for a while and that’s when he realises she’s fallen asleep, right here against him and he picks her up delicately. “Mrs Chaucer,” he says softly, with a dreamy smile on his face. There are certainly worse things he could think of.
