Everyone always wonders what life is all about. Well, I think I have the answer. life is about how people remember you when your gone. It is about the impact that you leave on your community, your family, the people who did and did not know you. Last week, the journalism field lost a great reporter, The city of North Charleston lost a model citizen, and I lost the chance to meet someone who was doing positive in an area of Charleston County, that is only recognized for the negative. Unfortunately, I did not know this young man, but I know his father and his aunt. I know about him through the stories he wrote for the Post and Courier and the stories written about him. Jasiri was only 24 years old, but in 24 years, he made a bigger mark on his community than many people make in 48. He volunteered to walk the streets of neighborhoods plagued with crime to try and stop the killing. He mentored young boys. He was an active member in his church. All the while, he wasn't judging these people, he didn't have a pompous attitude that he was any better than them, he just wanted to help them. He saw the problems that plagued the city, and instead of just reporting about them, he made an effort to solve them. If more people were like Jasiri and didn't think that their lives were measured in how great their grades were, what type of degrees they had, how much money they have or what they owe in debt, then this world would be a better place. All this crap that people get sooo fucking caught up on is meaningless. No one has written about The type of car Jasiri owned, or how much money he has in the bank. They wrote about what he did to change a community and the positive impact he left on the lives of other people. Just keep in mind every time you come in contact with someone, every time you do something, if you are truly doing something that if you were to die tomorrow, people would remember you positively for.
