Prologue

“Congratulations on that promotion, Ken” Hyde clapped a hand over his friend’s back, they were at their usual drinking place. It was Friday, drinking night and couple with Ken’s new position at work, the rounds this time was times two than the usual order of beer and wine. There were four of them at the small round table, in the private room they always, always, order. The table was littered with a lot of bottles and cans, glasses that are either half-empty or half-full.

Tonight was a celebratory night or well, a very good excuse for them to drink more than they can handle. But all that aside, they were very with what their friend has achieved- and well, thankful that they have more excuse to get drunk tonight than the usual.

There was Hyde, a school mate of his at college who began off as a medical student and is actually now a manga artist, living day by day drawing scenes for his manga and releasing a good chapter once every week. And releasing the whole manga itself a month. There was Sakura who works as producer for a musical company, he was actually a busy guy but then Friday was a night he would give up all his work for his friends. And then there was Hiro, who worked as a cosmetic surgeon- something that actually made everyone laugh for one reason or another- was sitting across the table from Ken.

Ken had a corporate life, working in an office and signing documents that were to seal deals that would reap millions of yen in month, in a week, sometimes in a day.

He loved his job- loved the money that raked it in- but if he were to choose he’d give up his promotion for the life of a photographer. Roaming the city day in and day out, snapping away at cars that passed by or just looking out his window. But then again, it wasn’t something he can stick too long because of the amounting paper work he has sitting on his desk.

Though it didn’t mean he didn’t spend on his endeavour, there was a Nikon D1000 sitting on his desk that has been under his care for a while now. And it was no mere paper weight, he knows how to use it and when he’s out of the office and might feel a stroll- or an event or something just to use it, he takes his camera with him. It all started with a point and shoot Sony Cybershoot in college however he learned a little more. Ken even got to borrow someone’s camera, just to know what it feels to have the heavy weight of the DLSR on his hands. It took time but he got the basics and years rolled under he collected enough wages to get himself a camera.

Sakura laughed; back to the present.

He clapped a hand over Ken’s back, smilingly said, “You know maybe you should take that life of photography you’ve been wanting for... well forever”

“Yeah” Hiro pointed at Ken with a finger as he held on to his drink, “That thing... that Nikon thing, it can do more than just gather dusts at your condo”

Ken appreciated his friends support, really, “Ah fuck, guys you’re just fucking with me”

“No, no!”’ Hyde said, looking almost serious- it was the alcohol talking, though most of it had truth “I mean, you got a gift... you... you should seriously think about... making... your hobby-”

“Yeah Hyde’s drunk” Sakura sneered.

“No I’m not” Hyde snapped, before looking back at Ken, “I mean... after all... after... everything... Oh shit”

Hiro and Sakura rolled their eyes, then Sakura said, “Bastard’s drunk”

“We better get him home or he might kill himself or something” Hiro said peering over at Hyde who... apparently passed out on his seat. The surgeon was pretty amused at the guy, while Sakura didn’t seem all too disturbed at the fact of bringing Hyde home... Though it doesn’t surprise Ken and Hiro why would he look a little bit smug.

The homoerotic feelings between them were something they never did hide.

“Yeah, you better try not to rape him” Ken mused without second, and a raised brow, “You know how whiney Hyde gets when he’s in a situation he doesn’t like”

“When did he never like it anyway?” Hiro asked with raised brows.

“What are you talking about?” Sakura asked innocently as he decided to pick Hyde up from his pathetic place on the floor, “I’m not going to do anything to him”

The two friends left sober and not holding on to Hyde took turns sneering at Sakura. They knew his agenda but didn’t bother to speak too much of it after; the two just rolled their eyes and knew in a few minutes they were going to leave either ways. Sakura himself- apart from the obvious malicious hint in his eyes - he has his own job to look after in the morning. Hiro needed to attend to some women with high needs for Botox.

Then there was Ken... who was actually free the whole weekend. He didn’t know what to do but with how his comrades were going to unavailable until their next Friday meet up.

When they left the bar, Hiro deciding it be good for Hyde that he take the man home instead of Sakura, though it left the other a little bit annoyed he didn’t say anything. They bid their good nights and Ken himself just watched as Hiro called in for a taxi both for him and Hyde. Sakura pulled out his car keys and went on his own, waved Ken and said his final congratulations then went on his way back to his home.

When the man was left on his own, he stood there for a minute in front of his favourite drinking bar. He pulled out a smoke from his pocket and then stayed where he was. Ken wasn’t exactly sure what to do now, but the best idea seemed to go home.

But there was something though, and he can’t point it out. It’s a feeling that’s been bugging him for a while now.

The rugged man shrugged it off like he always does; maybe it’s the jitters of having achieved a higher name for himself at work. But it can’t just be that, really? The raven haired man licked his lips, the taste of his cigarette something he doesn’t appreciate anymore as he flicked it out and decided to walk to his own car.

As he sat down on the seat, he closed his eyes and just... let everything that happened that week go through his head. He got his promotion a couple of days back, and then everyone was congratulating and he was given a new office. It’s been pretty great, and well, he wasn’t the kind of guy who go for the extremely large bouquet of flowers... but he appreciated each and every one of them.

He yawned, maybe it was time to go home.

He started the car, the soft touch of his bed was haunting him.

Though he should’ve felt something else was haunting him too.

As he continued to drive, he swears that he was somehow losing his touch. It was strange, since after all he wasn’t the kind of man who couldn’t hold his alcohol. But he was starting to get a little bit drowsy, maybe he was just starting to get a little too sleepy?

He kicked the metal a little harder, wanting to get home sooner.

He put on a little music, pulled a CD blindly out of his small collection and pushed it inside his car player. Music started flooding his car, and a song by his favourite band Laruku played out a soft ballad that seemed to just make his almost sleepy condition worse. Ken growled a little bit, pushing a button on that was supposed to get him to the next track, distracting him from the road that that was in front of him.

“Not a lullaby come on...” he urged the player, not noticing the figure that was a few feet from his car. When he finally found an upbeat tune, it was then that he looked up and saw the body that was standing in the middle of the street.

Before he could even make a turn to keep himself from hitting the figure, his car collided with it. Smashing against his vehicle, by instinct his body made the car swerve and it spun like crazy. The moment; thankfully, he didn’t hit a tree though his car went out off the road.

His lights were glaring wide in the darkness and his own eyes were wide awake shock. His heart was pumped so hard; the blood rushing to his ears almost blocked the sound of his car engines.

He grasped himself and held on to his chest, not understanding what just happened but when he finally did... Ken got out of his car; the engine was still on and running.

The man leaned against his car, but forgetting for a moment what just happened and why he was in the situation he was in. And when the man remembered, he looked back on the street to look for the body that he- for lack of better term- bumped with his car.

His eyes widened as he looked around, his eyes searching, searching for that body. And yet when started to investigate, it seemed like... the body disappeared. The body was nowhere to be found, almost as if he... just went crazy on his own.

Ken couldn’t understand, what just happened right now? Was it really his drowsiness coupled with the beers?

He walks back to his car, a simple limp on his walk.

Backing up on the road, the music no longer on and his head awake as he can be; Ken was intent on going home.

The engine of his car blocking out sound of small voice, repeating just one word through the dark night:

Ken
