Sexy Opinion: Concerts

Oct 19, 2006 11:15

So being as how my dance class was canceled yesterday, I elected to not sit at home in my dorm all night and rather went out to a concert with Kathy, who was kind enough to give me an extra ticket that she had.

And we're not talking any kind of crap concert, either. Kathy and I went to no less than a Flogging Molly concert, and it basically kicked my ass so hard you would not believe. It was pretty awesome.

The concert was in a place called the Water Street Music Hall, which isn't too far from U of R; the cab fare was like 11 bucks there and 13 bucks back because on the way back, the driver was a dick and took a longer route. The Music Hall is this small little venue with guitars on the walls and a bar on the side and all sorts of great stuff. There were two opening acts, both of whom I was pretty impressed with. The first band was some band from Rhode Island, I believe, called Zox. Four man group, with a drummer who basically looked like a surfer, a bassist who looked like Cameron from Ferris Bueller, a guitarist/singer who had a blond white guy 'fro and screwed his face all up whenever he had to hit a high note. They also had this cool violinist dude who spent the entire set just rocking the fuck out on his violin. they were pretty awesome and Kathy and I got two of their cds for only five bucks, which is a pretty sweet deal even if they weren't as good as they were.

The second group was a band called Bedouin Soundclash, who I've never heard of but apparently they're hot shit over here and in canada. Some guy told me that they had the number one song in canada a couple years ago or something. They weren't bad and I wouldn't complain if I saw them again, but I honestly liked Zox better. Oh well.

And then Flogging Molly came on and people basically went apeshit insane. Kathy and I had gone straight up to the front in the very beginning; a mosh pit had formed during Zox's set, but I figured 'okay, I'll just stay here since the pit is a bit behind me, and I'll be fine." It didn't get any worse for Bedouin Soundclash, so I wasn't worried. When Dave King and the gang started playing, basically the entire audience was moshing. It was crazy for the first song, but still managable. After that song, Dave said, "Now, if anybody falls down in there, do the right thing and pick them the fuck back up again" and I figured he was joking

And then I nearly fell down like five times during the rest of the concert because everybody was pushing back and forth so hard. There was never any real animosity towards other people or anything, if I started to tip too far, I just stuck out a hand and somebody would grab it and pull me back upright. It was just that I was in the very front, where there was space for maybe 25 people and a couple hundred were all trying to get in there. After I figured out basically how everybody was moving, it was really a lot of fun. I moved off to the side for the last two or three songs, since I honestly just didn't have the energy to be in the pit anymore. It was really hot and I was incredibly dehydrated, so I just stood to the side and watched everybody else.

Kathy called a cab when the concert was done, and we went back to the U of R. There was a brief moment of excitement when we got in the cab; some other guy started to get in with us and was like "all right, where we going?" and we said, "Nowhere that you are." and he's like "No, it's okay, what's the address?" Kathy's like, "No, it's really not okay, get out of the cab." He says, "Okay, maybe next time, then." and walks off. In retrospect, it might have been a guy from my english class and I just didn't recognize him. God, I hope not.

Once we got back to u of r, kathy and I went to hillside and I got two bottles of water and an iced chai tea latte. I chugged a bottle of water in like a minute, which I would later regret. Kathy and I went back up to our rooms to get ready to take showers to wash off all the sweat, both ours and other people's. Maybe five minutes after I drank the water, I started shivering uncontrollably. Turns out that if you drink really cold water too fast, I guess it lowers your core temperature a little bit, which is actually a really shitty experience. I took a hot shower, which helped a bit, then I bundled myself up in blankets and went to sleep after assuring noelle that I wouldn't die and it wasn't worth it for her to come over. Normally I would have asked her to come, but it was like 1 in the morning or something and it was too much effort to ask her to come over here from gilbert when she really needed to go to bed.

My ears are still ringing now but I no longer feel like shit and I don't hurt from the pit. woo.
