this article on a blog I read, about the
National Ignition Facility. This made me go SQUEE! because it's been a long time since I've heard about this project. It's literally been in progress in some stage of building or another for the entirety of my adult life. The prospect that it's finally about ready to go off is very exciting, not just because it's awesome and full of SCIENCE.
The disclaimer, but also the point of pride, is that I grew up less than 10 miles from where it stands. But I did live up to my ambition to be fully out of town by the time it gets switched on. 700 miles away far enough? :-P
(The comments on the BoingBoing post are pretty fun to read, too. :-} )
