they are high maintenance pets, often coming with large vet bills. they are soft and cuddly, often affectionate. they aren't gross, but they also aren't trainable any more than a gerbil would be.
basically you'll be getting yourself a very expensive, high maintenance gerbil.
HOWEVER, they are high-maintenance pets. they need take dust baths (you can leave the little dust bowl in their cage) but you need to take really good care of them - they get colds and respitory infections quite easily (if you're going to move a lot over the next few months, could be traumatic for the poor little thing). also, they LOVE to chew on cords. :)
but they are soft and furry and gorgeous and quite friendly once they get to know you.
1) They are fucking adorable and the softest things on the planet, you will want to rub them all over your body. They are rodents, relatives (I believe) of the hampster and guinea pig. They bathe in dirt. They make great (if cruel) coats. They are from Peru.
2) No. No more than a rabbit would be (you'll have to clean out a tray of their "leavings"). And they're VERY clean animals, dirt baths aside. In fact, the dirt baths are incredibly cute and fun to watch...like just about EVERYTHING the chinchilla does.
3) A friend of mine owned several when we were in grade school. And those chinchillas were quite affectionate. I think they're like cats/rabbits though, in that some of them might be affectionate, some not...depends on personality. Training, I doubt is possible. Though if you said, "Be cute, chinchilla!" it would probably comply.
