Shameless use of a different icon for the moment, whilst I gaze in adoration at Tennant. Ahem.
So the new series of Dr Who is here, and although I've never really written about it before, I will freely confess to being a huge fan of new!Who. Anyway, I was so worried Donna was going to be dreadful (was even bracing myself for some serious character loathing), and instead I've been pleasantly surprised by how much her character has grown on me in the space of two episodes. This is not to say I don't miss Rose and Martha and Jack, but I applaud Donna, and am relieved beyond belief to finally witness a friendship in new!Who rather than a Doctor/Companion romance. (Which isn't to say I didn't approve of Rose/Doctor - once is fine. But every single time a new character is introduced?! I mean, that does stretch one's belief slightly.)
But Rose is back. I stifled my happy little piglet squeal of excitement and choked down on some spontaneous glee in favour of taking a rather more cynical view. I've avoided spoilers like the plague when it comes to this series, but I have a very, very strong suspicion that Rose might bite the dust in the end. Bringing her back from a parallel universe is a little too good to be true, and if she can just pop back and forth and is the Doctor's OMG ONE TRUE LOVE (and all that jazz), then it seems they're going to have to find a way to get rid of her permanently. I mean, after all, if they don't she really will be around forever.
Moving onto Captain Jack, I really hope he's back in this series. I have a great fondness for him, if only because he can get away with snogging the Doctor on pre-watershed television. Speaking of which (and the snogging) - has anyone else noticed that Who!Jack and Torchwood!Jack seem to be like two different characters? One is a smart, easy-going guy who's in love with the Doctor, and the other's an emo long-lived Time Agent with ISSUES. (And yes, it deserves the capslock if only because we are always being told how SAD and LONELY and TIRED Jack is in TW.)
Speaking of being in love with the Doctor - am I also the only one who feels really, really sorry for Ianto in Torchwood? I mean, I know Who and TW very rarely cross canon paths, but there's a couple of things we do know. 1) Jack's in love with the Doctor. 2) He waited well over a century and a half to see him again. 3) He drops everything and runs as soon as the Doctor asks him to.
I mean, can Ianto really compete with a 900 year old guy who can travel through time and space and live a hell of a lot longer and offer way more excitement than cups of tea? Yep, I do feel sorry for the poor lad, because my impression is that in spite of everything, Jack's still totally not over the Doctor. He keeps calling him 'my Doctor', for crying out loud. And angsting over him, and pining and...oh wait, we've already done that bit...
So yeah. Poor Ianto.
On a different topic, I avoid Who fandom, because it's one of the few shows that I actually like well enough to leave as is. We have all the slash already there, and (surprisingly) I'm also in support of the het pairings too. Therefore I feel no need to jump into fandom and swim around. I'll simply sit on the side and dip my feet in the canon pool instead, methinks.
Oh and one final thing: Why is the Doctor always all 'Woe, everyone always leaves me, or dies, or dies and leaves me'? He has an immortal companion for crying out loud. Some people are never happy. (And some script writers clearly don't think things through properly.) But on that note, some people have been complaining they don't like Tennant as the Doctor - he's too childish. Have I been watching a different series to them? Yes, he's insanely gleeful and manic quite a lot of the time, but Tennant also manages to pull off some extremely dark moments where the character is a dangerous person. Personally, I think he's excellent, if only because he can go from chirpy ten year old to sinister Time Lord in 0.5 seconds. No? Just me who thinks that? Oh, ok then.
And on that note, I will end today's rant/squee fest. This has been your daily dose of incoherent babbling. Oh, and more Moonstone soon. Because I've got three quarters of a chapter sitting on my computer, just waiting.
Oh, and it appears I have some new people on the friends list. Do feel free to introduce yourselves and say hi if you want to. I don't bite. :)
