Dear Courtney

Let's do something with your life this summer, okay?

Your job is pretty boring, but it pays well. Stop spending money online (concert tickets, ModCloth) and start saving for grad school and the future. School will get you places, a super cute wardrobe will not. In this vein, please organize your finance drawer and start real files. Piles don't count. Pay bills in full because interest is just killer. Get your life in order and stick it it, okay?

You need to supplement your boring job with things that matter to you, and this cannot just be the boyf. The boyf is wonderful, yes, but he is not everything so don't rely on him (or Flight of the Conchords, for that matter) to entertain you in your off hours. Go see your friends. You've been good with that lately so keep it up. They are the best people you know and have stood by you through the thick and thin. Stop taking them for granted.

Engage your brain. Read more. You went to Robarts last week, so that's good! Go to more gallery openings. Make the connections you need to get your career up and running. Back this up with more shooting and developing your two current projects. You're going somewhere with these so don't let them die.

Work on your portfolio. It's not enough to just take the photos and let them sit in RAW on your computer. Run them through CS3 and make a solid portfolio for graduate work. Get out and shoot with your sometimes collaborator and get more experience with large format, even if it doesn't go anywhere. And while you're at that, work on your damn statement. Make sure to reference Sontag and Pogue Harrison and whoever else you are reading this week if it pertains to your work. Show that you can think for yourself and research.

Get outside. Allergies are over now. Go for walks, help your mum in the garden, go to the island, just don't waste your off time in your room, at your computer waiting for something to happen. Make something happen.

Sincerely,

Courtney
