I've seen several people hypothesize that this thought could have gone through her mind (or maybe I've just seen you say it multiple times), and I love that idea. It makes so much sense that it would occur to her, even if she would immediately dismiss it as foolishness and assume he would never change enough.

she’s calmed by Spike’s murmur to her sister. “Just a thanks from your sis. Nothing to read into it.”

I like how sensible Spike is, that he knows not to make a thing out of it and do something that might chaser her away.

“Hey, try giving her chocolate on patrol or something. She’ll be happy to thank you.”

Heh, I was thinking about that mini-meta quite a bit while I wrote this. It's a way to get through Buffy's defenses without her having to actually admit to anything, just recognizing a potential without feeling as though she's acting on it.

S5 Dawn's attitude toward Spuffy in Crush always struck me as reluctant but accepting- and it's fun to build on that after Forever to play with her desires for some kind of cohesive family in her life. And Spike's still a badrude man here, and he takes advantage of Buffy's gratitude to push things further because he can't help himself. ;D

I bet Buffy would have had an easier time in S6 if this had happened...I wrote a S5 rewrite with Spuffy years ago that I wanted to sequel to S6 eventually

Man, this was lovely. I love your comics!fic so much, I forgot you write such nice, in-character fic for earlier seasons as well. You captured the tone of my favorite Spuffy time perfectly, even if AU. I'd love to read more!

Thank you! I rarely write anything Spuffy before S5, come to think of it- but I also enjoy this era enormously. It lends itself to fluffy-happy fic in ways that you have to work for in later seasons. :D
