A very complex relationship with many painful issues. Buffy tended to deny things she doesn't really want to look at too closely. This is a much more aware and honest take than we saw in canon.
Angel - Angelus? Are they really two different beings or not. Does the soul suppress Angelus? On ATS, Angel often does things that shocked me and caused me to wonder if a soul really does make that much difference.
I'd like to think that these were Buffy's thoughts during S2, thoughts she didn't dare express aloud.
I've always gotten the sense that Angel considers himself Angelus as well. That differentiation seems to be for the sake of his loved ones' mental peace.
And the last isn’t him, but at the same time it is, and something inside of her knows that he and his alter ego are one and the same, and she separates them only for the sake of her own sanity.
Oh yes. There's been many a discussion about the difference a soul makes. Wonderfully done. You've captured Buffy's despair, and her guilty pleasure perfectly.
The things that Angel has done with a soul? Is no different than what humans do, having souls. The soul can choose to do good or evil. Many a human has done despicable evil. Hitler, for one. Angelus, the demon, had no conscience, no soul, and was dedicated to doing evil. "With a song in his heart."
I've noticed that Angel never really seems to differentiate between his two personas, not as much as everyone else does. He still holds himself as responsible, even though I'm loath to say that he actually is. Technically, only the soul is responsible for good and evil, not the body, and what the body's done without the soul shouldn't be the soul's responsibility.

I love this elegant exploration of the dark side of Buffy's feelings about Angelus' obsession.
