Drabble- Back

Uh...yeah, so you know how I said that I quit? I really did, and I won't be reading the comics anymore. But that's not going to stop me from writing randomly schmoopy Spuffy during S8, because let's face it: nothing will. :D

Originally written for open_on_sunday, prompt "back," but won't be posted there for length!fail. Some Buffy perspective during #36.

He was back.

She bit back the grin on her face and replaced it with a comforting smile for her companion, whom she wanted to be right so much that she had very nearly convinced herself of it. He was the important one right now, not the man in front of her, the newly returned onetime champion.

The one who was finally back.

She’d sworn off mention of him, persuaded herself that she didn’t care and made sure that he knew it, and he returned in kind, smirking at her indifference. For a moment, her heart ached at how little he seemed to care, but then she remembered. He’d always known her better than anyone, and he saw through the façade to the woman within, saw how warmed she was by his presence. And he was touched by what he sensed, and at the same time disappointed and angry and hurt at all that she had said and done, but he hid it as easily as she hid long-repressed love. They communicated with their gazes, not their words, and for now, that was enough. In the current chaos, it would have to be.

But he was back, and she was confident that now they’d have all the time in the world to sort it out.

season eight, ficlet, spike/buffy, buffy the vampire slayer
