Serenity

I'm on my way home from a preview screening of Serenity, which was followed by a Q&A with Summer Glau and Joss Whedon.

Three words (for now), just in case anyone had doubts: it is good.

joss whedon, serenity, films, firefly

Summer Glau? Aw, drat! All we got was a crazy chick with a handmade birthday banner for Joss Whedon (we went to the second set of screenings? third set? the ones before this one anyway).

I was more excited about Whedon than Glau, personally. :)

Me too!

I'm always baffled by Media-fan types who squee over actors, but seem to have no idea that there even _are_ writers creating this stuff for them.

Word. To be fair, Whedon seems to do pretty well on this score--more than many tv/film writers, at least--but I'm especially convinced after last night. He's the guy with the big brain.

Although at Buffy/Angel/Firefly cons you'd be forgiven for thinking that noone else had any hand in making the shows at all.

This was particularly evident at Hyperion, where all the actors were going on about Tim Minear, and most of the audience didn't really seem to know who he was.

Isn't it obvious? It's the actors who are on screen, the characters they portray that people identify with, so it's them that get the attention. Also, they're prettier. :P

As primarily a Media-fan type myself, yes it can get a bit frustrating. I would pay good money to see Tim Minear or Jane Espenson, for example, at a con, but the economics of the situation mean it's unlikely to happen. On the other hand, I think Niall, when we've discussed this before, gives the actors too little credit in terms of their contribution to the show and their having interesting things to say.

More the second part of that. Most of the interviews I've read, and the few times I've seen the actors in person, they seem to have no idea how to talk about what they do in a useful or intelligent fashion. Summer, much as I hate to say it, seemed to be a bit of a ditz. On the other hand, I do think the performances are very important in making the shows and films what they are.
