Music, Migraines and Meanderings

Damn, migraines suck. I've gotten my second in my life tonight, complete with the visual aura in "classic" form after leg day today. Oh well, I've been worse off, and some Def Leppard soothes my pain. :) How could anyone not like 80s rock and monster ballads?! I mean you didn't have to be "gangsta" or "really depressed" to be cool. You could wear ridiculous outfits and actually have gorgeous interwoven melodies in your tracks. I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that rap songs that contain repetitive annoying samples, (such as that one with the Super Mario sound effects in it) and whiny singers could be causing my headaches. Not from the actual songs mind you, but from the sheer disbelief that some of these people are actually famous. I mean come on.

Some rap is excellent, and truthfully is some of the only stuff you can dance to and not look like you're an idiot or at an office Christmas party. -Yes, I even like 50 Cent- However, I think this music in some capacities is going in the wrong direction. There's too much of the generic "gee how can we make my song about dealing crack sound more appealing... I KNOW!!! We need more canned sound effects, more rapid shots of me lunging at the camera, and more flashes of $100 bills." rap, and the emo phase. Now I know what rap is supposed to stand for, but what about emo? As usual, some is really good, such as Dashboard Confessional, but Death Cab for Cutie? Not quite. There's no singing, there's only some guy talking in a low monotone with elevator music behind him. I can imagine all of the fans sulking together in unison.

Ultimately music is only good when it carries some emotion behind it. The audience has catharsis. Anger, pain, happiness, these all transition well when they're heartfelt. However, what I'll term as the aforementioned "generic rap" and "crappy emo" have no substance. The former is all about showing off how much of a rich thug someone is, and the latter is all about being a crybaby for no particular identifiable reason. Now there is some great music out there, the only problem is that they play all too much of this crap at the gym, which is why I'm on excedrin for the time being.
