My first job was as a cashier at a local Wal-Mart type store. It was the summer after I graduated from high school and right before I began college.

I hated it mostly because of my supervisors. I had never had a job before and never worked with money or customers. They put me on a register only after about 30 minutes of training. I was on my own on my second day. By week two I was on register one. I was ill prepared for what they put me through and I resented them for it.

Of course I learned through trial and error (because they weren't around to help me), but it wasn't a pleasant experience. I didn't really feel like a valued employee and it was like they didn't care about me at all. I gave my notice as soon as September came around and never looked back.

I'm not upset that I stuck with the job or that I took it. I believe everyone should work retail at least once in their lifetime. Gives you a taste of the real world. It also gives you some understanding of what people in retail go through. I'm always kind to my cashier.

I just hated how the management went about managing the store. I understand it has changed now and I'm glad for the current employees.
