So I'm finally going to get myself a tablet of some description as my belated birthday present, because my comic is actually going places...and my digital camera just isn't doing much to help it get there -_-;
So, all you much-more-tech-savy people - help? Please? We all know I don't have too much cash to play around with - is the Graphire3 8x6

As for tablets, wacom is the best brand. Sloo survived on the graphire (I think?!) we bought her, but wacom, in the end, is the best for pressure sensitivity and just goodness. :D

Ooooh now for tablets!
Basically, Wacom is the way to go!! The one I was using before was from Dolphin Peripherals; even though I think it had the same specs as the Wacom Graphire 2 it had a battery in the pen and that made a huge difference when working - not only is the pen heavier and thicker as a result, but it actually made my elbow feel odd the day after an intense 6-hour session. ^^;
The one I've got now is a Wacom Intuos 3 9x12 (so I can't tell you much about the Graphire), but it's a joy to work with. The pen glides smoothly across the tablet surface (instead of feeling like I'm engraving plastic), and I can work all night on touching up my lineart without any problem. The only thing about Intuous is that it's more expensive than the Graphire, because it's apparently swankier. :P ( ... )

The other thing I forgot to add is that some stores still carry old Graphire 3 and Intuous 2 stock, which are discounted. I'm not too sure what the differences between the different versions of the models are, but if you want to get a good deal there's that option too.

I'd already had a look around, and people seem to say that the Intuos is better, sensitivity-wise and such - particularly because you can get optional pens? (airbrush and such, I think? Maybe?) Although what I think would be really useful is a visual example of the same artist working on both, so I could compare...I guess in the end it's a matter of what I can afford.
I was wondering about sizes, though (because I have no concept of how to translat 5x8 or whatever into an actual, real-world, 'ok, this is how it would feel') - is smaller than 9x12 worth having? Or is anything less useful only as an alternative to a mouse?

Anyway! Yes, people would be right in saying the Intuos is better, well, it is! If you size up the technical specifications, the Intuos is better, simply because it's actually targeted at digital art professionals, whereas the Graphire tends to be more for home digital photo editing.
However! IMO these specifications mean nothing if you don't have the software and/or skills to actually utilise the full l33tness of the tablet. I think you're set for both so it won't be an issue; as for visual examples I have a hunch that it's more an experience thing rather than a results thing - as in, using the Intuos may feel more natural and getting the same results may be quicker/easier than using the Graphire. (Sadly, I went straight to the Intuos without ever having had a Graphire, so I can't really say. Plus, I'm not sure that I've done anything to truly test it out yet, so ( ... )

And yes!!! I'm fascinated as to how John conned you into it... although I have to admit, it's a very exciting project with you on board... I just thought your stuff suited it down to the ground. ^___^
I'll draw you a picture of the jacket and everything... I don't want the full thing, just a kind of... themed, tailored jacket with lots of buttons that *evokes* the hornblower thing but isn't actually *it*. Something for girls in other words. XD That's warm. XD
*hugs* Missing you already, dammit!

But as to John, it was pretty simple, really - I mean, he dangled the possibility of making puppets in front of me. You know I'm an easy target when it comes to anything doll-like :P

I know the feeling, though, I'd be mortified if you all read the fic up on crackpot. XD XD
