Three days before the start of term fifth year, Charles Xavier met the man he was going to marry one day. He didn't know it at the time, of course - he was just as skeptical of the whole "love at first sight" business as any rational Ravenclaw would be - but even he had to admit to some inkling that the scruffy-looking boy he bumped into outside Flourish and Blotts would change his life.
Erik Lehnsherr was a tall, gangly lad just a few months younger than Charles, but his eyes and the tattoo on his arm spoke of experiences far beyond that of a normal fifteen year old boy. Of the two dozen or so wizarding children who had been saved from the concentration camps, Erik was the only one who decided to leave the continent for England for his continued schooling. The others wanted to stay close to home but Erik jumped at the chance to get away, to erase the memories of barked commands in German and replace them with barked school lessons in English, to erase the smoggy air thick with the smell of burning bodies and replace it with the foggy earthy smell of the Scottish Highlands. His situation afforded him that chance, though his frankly brilliant wandwork certainly didn't hurt his cause and if he was doomed to be the best Auror Turned Defense Against The Dark Arts professor Hogwarts had ever seen, well, that was purely on ability alone - and many years down the road from where our story starts.
