Wow...Katrina and New Orleans is just...incomprehensible. It is something that we will be explaining to our children and grandchildren, it will be in their text books...it's really just massive.
And especially for those of us in the Houston area, now sharing our churches, astrodome, schools and homes with thousands and thousands of homeless elderly, woman, men, and children.
These were people who had lives just like us...and now that's all just gone. They don't even know if their homes are still standing.
Savannah and I volunteered at the Spring Tabernacle Church from about 3:45 till 6:30. I passed out waters and juice, sorted and folded clothes, dumped trash, went to walmart to buy underwear (these people don't even have underwear or socks!) and just talked to the people.
One guy i met, Dereck, is my age. He is a senior at a high school that no longer exists, and now he's homeless, living in a church gym with his 7 other family members. My mom told me if we found a nice family we could let them live with us, and i wish i could have dereck stay with us, but we don't have enough room to house 8 people. He thanked me for all that we were doing and then started talking about how he hasn't been able to get ahold of any of his friends and how all he wants to do is just get his diploma...he kept saying that, "I just have to get my diploma." He was then about to cry.. and it just gives me chills, really. To think that this could have just as easily been Houston...been me or you.
I gave him my number so he could call me and i could show him around town sometime, and he might end up going to oak, or if not at least some other school in klein.
I really suggest you all going to some red cross center and trying to help out, anything you can do.
