Timely Reflections

When you know things you got two antibodies mixed up and all that you've done in the past two weeks are useless, wasted, and can be safely classified as biohazards that need to be discarded, perhaps it's time to stop and think about everything that went wrong.

Surely, what was wrong wasn't just the two antibodies, but the status of mind I was ( Read more... )

(OMG i can't believe livejournal actually places scientific ads on your webby :/)

anyway, yes, just be numbed. you have to convince yourself that those animals are there for a utilitarian purpose. other than to fuel your research, they exist for no other reason. as a practising scientist, i find that argument a perfectly good one. i mean, in an artificial environment, animals aren't even subjected to the usual forces of natural selection. hence, it's not even a matter of whether the parents get to propagate their alleles; they are chosen to reproduce offspring that will be useful to us. point is, USEFUL TO US, not for the sake of preserving diversity. so, just kill lah! i'm not amoral/immoral or anything, but those organisms are there for us to conduct experiments on, not to act as repositories of desirable alleles for the long-term survivability of the species. as long as you don't kill them for perverse fun, i think it's still acceptable!

drosophila is still not too bad (since they are such repugnant creatures, lol). wait until you get mus musculus >.< i actually think that i will only get sad when i work with non-human primates. i don't even feel for mice, guinea pigs and rabbits. bahhh. i know that they experience pain, but that streak of altruism cannot override a scientist's desire to conduct real science. that's the whole point to animal research.
