This Sunday I will be holding a Ukrainian Easter egg dying party at my house.
These aren't "Easter eggs" like you're familiar with; they are awesome shiny
things. See the photos here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pysanka It takes only a little bit of practice or skill to make something as cool as
most of the eggs in the Wikipedia photo.
WHAT: Make shiny things!
WHO: You! And your cool friends! We will be dealing with fragile eggs and
seriously staining dyes, so please only bring along people who are good about
taking care of other people's things; and please RSVP.
WHEN: Sunday, October 12, from 10 AM until boredom (dinnertime is typical.)
Show up when you like, leave when you like, but doing an egg will typically
take a good couple of hours.
WHERE: My house, 5153 Fifth Avenue, at the intersection of Fifth and Wilkins.
It's a duplex -- 5153 is the right-hand door, not the front-facing one.
FOOD SITUATION: I will happily order things from Campusfood, but you will have
to pay for your own food.
RSVP-TO: gwillen@nerdnet.org, if planning to come, with approximate times
you'll be around.
More information:
You do not need to bring anything. I will supply eggs, dye, wax and tools for
the wax resist process, candles to melt the wax, tools to remove the contents
of the eggs if you so desire, and varnish.
Making an egg involves phases of drawing intricate things in wax, then leaving
the egg in dye for 15-20 minutes, and repeating for each color (3-6 colors
typically.) Most people end up pipelineing several eggs at once; you may also
wish to bring a book or something, but mostly people manage to stay busy.
Feel free to email me if you have any questions; and PLEASE RSVP! If you are
reading this the morning of and haven't RSVPed, do come anyway; but I'd really
like to get an idea of headcount, especially if you're bringing any friends.
