Abortion and Birth Control in Science Fiction

Feb 09, 2009 10:21

It occurred to me recently that although there's quite a bit of science fiction that deals with motherhood and reproduction, I can't think of any offhand that deals with abortion. I think an exploration of the representations of abortion (and, more broadly, birth control) in fiction, particularly science fiction, could be fascinating. So I have begun to do some preliminary research, which hasn't turned up much yet.

I've got the beginnings of a list of a few short stories and a couple of longer works that deal with abortion and a slightly longer list of works that deal with birth control more broadly (especially if I also look at texts about population control, which was at one point a recurring concern among SF writers), but it's still only a beginning.

So. Here's the deal. I know lots of you who read my journal read science fiction. If you can think of any that deals with abortion or birth control, please let me know. (If you know of any really interesting books about abortion that aren't science fiction, I'm interested in those, too; it's just that I'm more interested in science fiction at the moment.) I'm interested in this for the technologies involved (technologies not of reproduction but of prevention) as well as for the representations of the ethical and social consequences for using birth control or having an abortion.
