This sentence is from a chapter on Octavia Butler's Xenogenesis trilogy (or, as it's now known, Lilith's Brood). I wouldn't recommend Vint's book unless you're really into literary criticism and/or posthumanist theory, but I would definitely recommend Octavia Butler's books.
