This sentence comes from Sherryl Vint's Bodies of Tomorrow: Technology, Subjectivity, Science Fiction, a book about the ways that theories of posthumanity play out in recent science fiction. This sentence is from a chapter on Octavia Butler's Xenogenesis trilogy (or, as it's now known, Lilith's Brood). I wouldn't recommend Vint's book unless you're really into literary criticism and/or posthumanist theory, but I would definitely recommend Octavia Butler's books.
