Going by your summary, I do not see how Fauset retreats from a strong feminist argument. My knowledge of current feminism is limited, coming mostly from Kipnis, but as I understand it, present-day feminism is coming to grips with the inner woman; the purpose of equality is to achieve a meaningful happiness, and if a woman discovers that her happiness is contingent not only on accomplishment but loving companionship, how does this shy away from feminism?
