I just watched an 1.5 hours worth of my Jamie Oliver DVD. And I was shocked to realize that I hadn't ever seen those episodes before. I've had that DVD for over 2 years! But I must say that my love for Jamie Oliver has been reaffirmed. :) You have to respect anyone who can talk that fast while cooking up a storm, don't you?
Our orchestra concert was tonight. We only did one piece (Mendelssohn's Fifth Symphony), because the rest of the time was filled with solo performances. It went pretty well on the whole, but I think I botched about 2/3rds of all the tricky passages that I had painstakingly worked through in the practice rooms. Kinda makes you wonder why you even practice, huh. :/ And I miscounted on the ENDING, of all places...but fortunately I just looked for the downbeat of the last note from the conductor and ended along with everyone else. Haha.
It's so different being onstage though. Sitting in a rehearsal, there's no pressure and half the time I'm not even concentrating fully. But when you're up in front of an audience (and I had to sit in the flipping front row this time) and the lights are making you sweat and everything, my fingers just felt like molasses and I couldn't will them to move any faster, no matter how hard I tried. The tempo just felt impossibly fast and I would glance ahead to some sixteenth note passages during the rests and think "aughh, there's no way!" Ughh! Ah well.
The first and most important reason that I do orchestra is because I love playing in an orchestra. And even though I don't feel I had a very stellar performance tonight, there were times during our piece where I got chills because everyone sounded so good together. And Mendelssohn's Fifth is such a great piece. Sarah came along to the concert and she said the same thing, and I think this is the first time she's ever heard it, so that's saying something.
Anyways, here's a pic of the orchestra when we finished the symphony:
So thanks SASJO! It's been fun playing with you all. :)
