Crossing the streams: How to comment on other journal sites

Jul 25, 2007 12:30

With people going off in every direction, here is something you can do if you don't want to start piling up accounts on every lj clone out there: use OpenID. For example, I used my cmshaw livejournal account to leave these comments on my insanejournal account just now. I'm just doing this for test purposes -- I'll be using my cmshaw insanejournal ( Read more... )

I really appreciate your efforts to make this transition easy for everyone. Thanks for putting in the time and making it understandable.

Thank you! I'd say that I'm just doing my part, but the dirty secret is that this is kind of geeky fun. ;)

This is *great* - I use OpenID for blog-commenting, but never bothered to explore it further. Thanks so much.

You're welcome! I haven't used OpenID much myself -- is there anything I'm leaving out?

[Here from metafandom. [wave]]

OK, this is cool. I poked around and posted some comments to your IJ post using OpenID -- never done that before so thanks for the opportunity. :)

Question -- how do you use an icon with an OpenID post? I tried a couple of times but didn't see an option for it. [squint]

[Hi! *waves back*]

Once you're logged in with your OpenID account, you should be able to go to http://www.insanejournal.com/editpics.bml and upload an icon. (The link may not be obvious in insanejournal's navigation; I noticed it because cmshaw.insanejournal.com shows the nav strip and the nav strip has that link on the far left. Once you've uploaded at least one icon, there will be a link from your profile and the icon dropdown will also be enabled during commenting.)

Aha, sneaky! I didn't see any option for that once I'd logged in over there and I thought there'd be some way of linking to my LJ icons or something like that. OK, coolness -- thanks again. :D

I tried to comment on a story that was hosted on Wordpress using OpenID, but it wouldn't work for me. I assume it's because of the underscores in my username, because of that my LJ addy is not [username].livejournal.com, but users.livejournal.com/_bettina_
:-/

Oh, I forgot about the underscores issue! Are you able to comment as "users.livejournal.com/_bettina_"?

Okay, I tried to comment over at your IJ and it worked. It didn't work when I tried it at the Wordpress journal. That's very weird.

Weird! (Maybe WordPress and Livejournal/clones have slightly different implementations of OpenID...?) But thanks for letting me know what worked -- I'll add a note about underscores to the main post.
