There's almost a foot of snow outside my house (in case you didn't already know :P)! I suppose this is a fitting way to begin January 2009, if it is almost four weeks into the new year (geez if time goes by this fast for me now, I'm scared to find out what it's like in 20 years). Anyway, since this is my first post, I can pretend it's the beginning of the year :)
I knew when I left work yesterday that I wouldn't be going into work today, what with the insane amount of time I spent just leaving campus, and the forecast of 5 to 8 inches by midnight. So the text message and phone call at 6a.m. were hardly a surprise. I think this may be only the second time in my life that I've actually been excited about massive amounts of snow. It means I get to stay home from work, which is a novelty for me. See, growing up, a big snow simply meant that I could go out and play in it AFTER I finished school, and AFTER all the other kids had already tired of playing in it all day. They got a day off school, but (lucky me) I didn't have the problem of leaving the house to go to school. Sometimes it even meant that I couldn't go somewhere that I wanted to go, and, as I spent more time in the house than out of it, this was usually a big disappointment. In high school, snow or ice meant missing things like group classes and church activities. Most everyone lived closer to the church than we did, and it was much more feasible for them to get there in bad weather. Even in college, I think I can only remember staying home from school or work because of bad weather twice.
So when I say that I'm excited about the snow, you can understand that this is a big deal for me :)
