http://gallopmusic.com/about Gallop, fronted by singer-songwriter Calla Mapel, is a Portland, Oregon-based folk group. Their americana lullabies have a salt-of-the-earth quality that echoes classic folk.
Born and raised in the Sierra Nevada mountains of Northern California, Calla moved to New York City in 2005, where she began collaborating with classically trained pianist Jesse Waldman. They relocated to Portland, Oregon in 2009, and just happened to move into a house next door to members of Horse Feathers, Petoskey and Pigeons. Surrounded by this community of talented musicians, they began broadening the instrumentation of the music and formed Gallop.
Gallop released their debut studio album in July of 2012. The album, self-titled, was tracked live onto 1” tape, lending a warm, roomy character to the music.
Calla and Jesse are joined by Kyle Bruser on the banjo and Haley Keegan singing backup vocals. They are often joined by Angie Kuzma (Horse Feathers, Petoskey, Pigeons) on violin, and Lauren Vidal (Horse Feathers, Petoskey) on cello.
Here they are performing the songs Swampy Cree, Old Boy and Shapeshifters, with special guest Ethan Waldman on violin. The performance was filmed by Erik Schultz & Clint Snow for The Portland Sessions.
