“Sometimes, I think we are on the wrong side,” she quietly says as they wait for a supposed suspect to leave his house. They have been watching him for hours, silently observing his actions. The order from the chief said not to go after Harris while he was in his home, so they waited.
“Why, because the bad guys are such good people?” James asks.
“Yeah, they kind of are,” Elle replies as she watched Harris play with his kids.
The last few cases were pretty easy to deal with, mostly white collar crimes. But seeing the criminals at home with their families or at work with a good group of co-workers was taking its toll on Elle. She knew these men were not model citizens because they stole the money that provided them with a comfortable life. Yet, she couldn’t help but recognize something in their behavior.
These criminals were happy. Not ‘I have all the money in the world at my fingertips’-type happy, but ‘I am really at peace with myself’-type happy. Elle wanted that. She wanted to feel content with her life. She wanted to know that, even after a hard day at work, she could still put a genuine smile on her face. If the bad guys were happy, what was wrong with her?
After a few minutes more, Harris left the house to take out the trash. Elle and James got out of their car and approached their suspect. Harris’ family watched from the doorway and Elle caught sight of their sad looks.
"I really think we are on the wrong side," she thought to herself as they put Harris into their car and drove away.
