By the end she's not pretending anymore. At least about how she feels. The rules they had all thought were written in stone at the beginning crumbled early on. Everything was different at the end than the beginning. She breathed out an I think I love you one cold winter night when they sat perched in the trees watching the oncoming wolves. He'd taken her hand, given it a squeeze and later when they pulled the wooden bullets from each other's bodies he repeated her words with all the conviction in the world.
After that her days, as fucked up and awful as they are, end and begin with three words. Her and Elena don't talk for months. Tyler calls her a whore who constantly falls for her best friend's leftovers. She doesn't care. She doesn't pretend, she moves beneath him and she doesn't have to be careful or hold back, she doesn't have to lie, she doesn't have to be anyone but who she is. There is no such thing as close enough, and the favorite part of her life is hearing his footsteps cross her doorstep.
The world is cruel and guided by things put into motion long before any of them were even thoughts in the stars. Their lives are not theirs. They're lives molded from the mistakes of others.
Elena dies one summer afternoon. Bonnie three weeks later. Caroline kills Tyler in that winter she breaths her confession to Stefan. Katherine proves herself at the end, dying to try to save Elena. They make a pact. They disappear. They scatter their lives to the wind and take a cue from Katherine who started it all. They survive. And every night her heart aches for the sound of his footsteps at her door.
