"It is what it is"

I've been hearing this phrase "it is what it is" a LOT lately. I've even started using it myself, I guess in an ironic sense, because it amuses me so much. I mean, if you think about it, it's not just cliché and tautological, it's completely circular! The only expression that could possibly be emptier would have to be utter silence.

Of course, I'm too literal about these things. One of my favorite websites UrbanDictionary.com actually has an entry for this expression which is surprising because usually urbandictionary is only helpful for deciphering bizarre sex terms and hipster slang.

So there is a little nuance to this expression, and I could see how it could have some contextual meaning. I just think it's so funny how frequently it is used yet how empty it is. These are empty times, though.
