Tonight I'm proctoring the final exam for my calculus class at ITT Tech. I have 3 students now, which is half of the original enrollment in my class. Of my three students, one showed up early, one showed up 20 minutes late, and one came 65 minutes late (5 minutes after the exam had begun). I hope they all fail, but it looks like 2 of them might earn a passing grade. (My philosophy is that the grades are entirely determined by the students, and I am merely an accountant for them. So I can say things like "I hope they fail" because honestly I have very little influence in the matter; grading in math is very objective and mechanical.) I do have one student who is actually trying hard (he's the one who showed up early tonight), and I feel bad for him because the school put him in calculus when he doesn't really have any of the prerequisite knowledge. I expect that any mistakes he makes on the exam tonight will be basic algebra issues and not problems applying calculus.
In case you can't tell, I'm writing this entry while they are taking the exam. I am so glad this quarter is over. My experience here has been dissatisfying, and apparently I'm not alone: When I was hired in June, the woman who hired me was on her way out of the company. Her replacement left within a matter of weeks of taking over the position, and I'm not sure if there is another replacement yet. The dean had to take up some of her orientation duties, and a few weeks ago he left the company as well. Last week, the director of the school left. I almost (almost) came up here last night to attend the staff and faculty meeting to meet the new director, and maybe find out what is going on around here. Is someone in Indy (ITT HQ) cleaning house around here? But I didn't go, because I'm done here, and I think that if I spend another quarter teaching here I might never want to teach again.
Anyway, I could go on and on about this stuff, but that would probably contradict some of the papers I signed when I was hired. I'm just glad that I have another job which I love, and now I will be able to spend more time there.
