Salsa

I just got out of my first group lesson at Salsa Memphis. I had some trouble finding the place because their building doesn't have a sign on it, it's just kinda nestled in a half-empty (or half-full) shopping mall on Mendenhall near Mt. Moriah. For non-Memphians, that's a pretty ghetto area near the shake junt Platinum Plus and up the street from Southwest Tennessee Community College (where I taught classes earlier in the summer). Anyway, I got there around 7 which is when the class is scheduled to start. People were trickling in until we finally got started around 7:15 or 7:20, and the lesson continued for a full hour. When it started, they were going over many steps in quick succession, so it was a bit overwhelming, but I kept up okay. Then we paired up and practiced dancing with a partner. There was a good gender mix, maybe 16 men and 16 women total, and we rotated partners very frequently which I like.

I didn't hang around to watch the performance class that followed, but I am thinking about going over to Vault for the "after party". Vault is some kind of bar or club on Highland strip. In the meantime, I'm over at Java Cabana pretending to get some work done. I'm running slightly behind of schedule but I should be fine as long as I am productive tomorrow or Friday. Monday is a holiday but I need to sit down and do some prep for my calculus class which starts next week -- I'm not sure how I'm going to fill four hours with lecture but it should be interesting.
