Reflections on the Current Political Landscape

Oct 05, 2006 10:48

I spent way too much time on CNN, Rasmussen Reports, and Polling Report last night. I'm in a very political mindset. So here goes...

Should Dennis Hastert resign?
Yes. If he knew about Foley a single second before he initiated an investigation, he failed as Speaker.

Should Donald Rumsfeld resign?
Yes. Iraq quagmire? His fault.

Should Democrats re-take the House as a result of the Foley controversy?
No. They would have done the same damn thing.

Should Democrats re-take the House anyway?
Yes. We know the Republicans are sleazy and awful. The Democrats will be too, but I'm only 99% certain of it, rather than 100%.

Am I excited about a Pelosi Speakership?
God no. She's clinically insane.

Should Republicans be the Party of Family Values?
Don't be ridiculous. How many families advocate pre-emptive wars, fundraising scandals, hampering investigations, and placing a mentally unstable potential pedophile on the Committee on Missing and Exploited Children?

The most exciting aspect of the upcoming elections?
Joe Lieberman. Upstart Ned Lamont has finally given Lieberman the chance to be where he's always belonged: in neither party.

The rise of politics free of the constraining and corrupting party apparatus?
I sure hope so.

AWARDS

Cleanest:
Joe Lieberman, Evan Bayh, Lincoln Chafee, Tom McClintock. They follow the rules, avoid extreme partisanship, and seem at least decently honest to their beliefs.

Dirtiest:
Donald Rumsfeld, Mark Foley, Duke Cunningham, Tom Delay, Hillary Clinton, Cruz Bustamante. Do they ever say anything that's true or decent?

Craziest:
Nancy Pelosi, Rick Santorum, Sam Brownback. Polarization leads to crazy.

Dumbest:
Barbara Boxer, Phil Angelides, George W. Bush. Combined IQ among the three is roughly equivalent to my age.

MY IDEAL GOVERNMENT

President: Evan Bayh
VP: Joe Lieberman

Cabinet:
State: Lincoln Chafee
Defense: John McCain
Justice: Dianne Feinstein
Treasury: Ben Nelson

Senate: Democrat-controlled, with Clinton, Santorum, Brownback, Boxer gone.
House: Republican-controlled, with Pelosi gone.
Supreme Court: full of true conservatives. Roberts can come, too.

There, I think it's out of my system for the time being.
