I'm going to spontaneously combust

Okay, so my title may be a bit misleading. Combustion is a real possibility, but it won't be spontaneous. It's 113 degrees here right now. I think it would be more surprising if I DIDN'T combust.

I really do like heat and all, but this is a bit ridiculous. If it were true dry desert heat, like it should be, I'd be thrilled. But alas, the gods o' moisture have decided to screw with the natural order of things. In addition to the heat, it's humid. As of half an hour ago, the heat index was 118. I refuse to acknowledge that as a real temperature.

By the by, the only reason I was out in the heat was because of the yearbook debacle. The photographer screwed up the database, and put all the seniors' middle names as their first names. Fantastic, eh? I'm sure Adam Bley will be thrilled to find out that the world will now know him as "Winter Bley." Chip Dickerson will be equally pleased to be known as "Moon." The whole ordeal has taught one important lesson: don't give your kids weird middle names. Yeah, it'll be seen less often than the first name, but it'll still be seen. And "Jed," is not a name you want to be public knowledge.

I've been reading "Resurrection," by Tolstoy. I highly recommend it, but only if you've read "Anna Karenina." Anna is far more important than this one, even though it's damn good. It sort of reads like a soap opera, so it's more entertaining than truly deep or complex. Which is funny, because Tolstoy thought this was his masterpiece. He spent 12 years writing it, and only about two years writing Anna. It just reinforces the idea that the harder you work, the worse things become.

Speaking of things becoming bad: my family is taking a foreign exchange student. Isn't that HILARIOUS? My family. With a foreign kid. Who barely speaks English. Hahahaha. I think they got the best possible one, though: a 13-year-old boy from China. After authoritarianism, I guess my parents' rules wouldn't seem that outlandish.

What IS outlandish is the idea that I'm going to learn German. But despite the fact that I hate learning foreign languages, and despite the fact that I have very little time to learn German, and despite the fact that I have to learn Czech while I'm in Prague...despite all of that, I think I'm going to enroll in German when I get back in the Spring. Basically, I want to get involved in the State Department, and that's impossible if you don't know a foreign language. I hate Spanish, and I want to focus on eastern Europe anyway, so I'm going for Czech and German. I figure if I get a solid enough background in each one, I can at least pass the foreign service exam. We'll see how long this lasts, though. My career decisions have been a bit fickle as of late.

On a completely unrelated note: has everyone seen the trailer for the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie? If you haven't, go do so. It seems a bit premature for that series to be brought back, but they'll at least have the 16-24 demographic pretty solidly hooked. I mean, c'mon...they're heroes in a half-shell...the world's most fearsome fighting teens! Who could pass that up?

Final note: if anyone, (especially people in the LA area) want a nice car stereo/CD player, let me know. I'm getting rid of my car soon, but it's got a nice CD player, and it would be a shame to waste that.

Later, chaps.
