Road Trip Part 1

So I went on this road trip to help a friend (Reid Bowers) get his car and all his stuff out to Vancouver British Columbia. It was/is an interesting journey. Reid and I are very much like yin and yang in almost every respect it seemed. To start with the dynamic opposites: he is very high maintenence and I am very low maintenance, he gets easily angered while driving and speeds up behind people and gets frustrated that they aren't passing the right fast enough while I am just really patient and laidback about the whole thing, he's loud and I'm quiet, he likes soft music and I'm more into edgier stuff (like Ska and punk) at least while marathon driving. more on that as I need to vent.

We left the morning after Xmas for Iowa to spend Xmas with his dad's family. It was a good time. Reid was kind of a putz so I spent a good amount of time hanging out with his family and not so much him. I love active little kids. Their style of games are so much fun.

After that we drove straight through to Boulder Colorado (outside of Denver) and stayed there for a day. This was a detour from the original plan to go to Dallas but I think much better becuase I have family out in Denver. The unfortunate thing was that my uncle and two of my cousins (19yrs, twins) were really ill and didn't really get to visit. My cousin that's a week older than me was around and so we played some pool with him and our host (an old family friend of Reid's). I hadn't seen my cousin since our great-grandmothers last big birthday in summer of 1994.

Then we had a 17hr drive from Boulder to just outside Los Angeles. We stayed with another old friend of his. We left around noon the next day to San Diego to visit Wes Mixa and his serious girlfriend

We stayed there for a few days. We turned settlers of catan into a drinking game for New Years. Reid and I went across the border to Tijauna just to be able to truly say we went on a roadtrip to Canada via Mexico from Wisconsin. We didn't stay long in Tijuana and it was pretty boring.

After that we went back up to LA area and visited Barry Lawson and another old friend of Reid's. We caught the Packers game at a Pub and it was exciting.

Next we went up to San Jose to break the trip all the way up the coast. We stayed with Eric Seidel's roommate though Eric was not back from break yet.

The next morning we wanted to make it to Seattle but the weather got really bad in Oregon. They had snow and freezing rain, which they appearantly only have once every 12 years or so. Thus, Oregon doesn't salt, sand, or plow their roads and we had to stop south of Salem for the night at a motel becuase the roads were so bad and there were bad drivers on the road (including being stuck for an hour and a half on the interstate because a truck 5 miles up jack-knifed itself).

The following morning we made it up to Seattle where we visited Jonathan Silvia who had jsut moved out there. Reid dropped me off becuase it was a convenient place to separate and I had had enough time stuck with Reid 24/7 and didn't want to be there when he would probably get loud and frustrated near the border and the crazy jubilation (and other things) when he saw Amy (his girlfriend and former fiancee) again. I was going to head out of Seattle that evening on a Greyhound but the weather was still bad and there was no eastbound travel. So I spent a day wasting around reading while Jonathan was busy with job interviews and that evening I hopped on a 22 hour bus ride to Utah to visit Debi. And that's where I am now. More to report on those adventures some other time.
