I had quite a relaxing weekend after the stress that was Friday's exam. On Saturday I pootled off back to Abingdon for the afternoon to see the_div for a game of Federation Commander (it's based on Star Fleet Battles but without a rulebook hefty enough to kill a man). I promptly got trounced, mainly on account of thinking as if I was playing SFB but also because Div had some nice dice (as he always does). The two of us then headed round to the park (along with limitus and Rich) for a kickabout, which taught us all that we are in fact now OLD OLD MEN and should not do such silly things as running around chasing a football, especially when a bunch of fifteen-year-olds ask to play and make us look like old duffers. We still beat them though, plus we managed not to kill any of them (although Rich gave it a good try when he fell over onto one of them). It was actually quite enjoyable, but boy were we all knackered at the end.

We then returned back to Matt & Div's place where Matt joined us in a couple of games of "Frag!", which is a first-person-shooter computer game without the computer. Boardgames rule all, I have decided, because the social aspect of having a bunch of people sat around a table chatting whilst enjoying a game cannot be beaten. Oh, and to top things off nicely there was a barbeque going as well. All in all a good day.

Sunday was dinner at my parents (not much more to say about that really, pretty much business as usual), then I came back home and watched the first episode of Firefly which Matt had lent me on DVD. I was very impressed, and I'm actually slightly annoyed (in an easy-going way, obviously) that no-one was more insistent that I watch this a long time ago. It should be noted that I watch very little TV and I need telling about this kind of thing.

Monday I headed back to Matt & Div's abode again for another three games of Federation Commander. Three! This definitely plays a lot quicker than SFB, we'd probably only have got one game of that done in that time (or maybe two if it was just one-on-one duels). Anyway, I lost the first two (thanks to Div and his dice-fu, I really don't know how he does it) but managed to win the third to retain some small measure of dignity. Predictably enough my victory only came when I switched to Kzinti ships, which proves that I'm far more used to those ships and their associated tactics than I am with anything else.

It was good to hang out with the gaming guys again. I don't do that as much as I like now that I live in Eynsham, and I think this weekend made a bloody good case for plumping for Abingdon as a place to live rather than Witney. Much harder to get to work, obviously, but I can put up with that - plus it might give me the incentive I need to get around to learning to drive.
