Comfort of Strangers

I am pleased to report that the new Beth Orton album, "Comfort of Strangers", is very very good. Seriously, from reviews I was expecting it to be okay-to-good, but it grabbed me by the ears and bade me like it on the very first listen. I am very glad I felt flush enough to fork out the extra couple of quid to get the limited edition with the bonus disc.

This only increases my anticipation of the Shepherds Bush gig on the 27th. I am seriously considering going to the second date the day after as well even though that does seem a bit excessive (but would make up for the last time I was going to see her, only for it to be cancelled due to the recording of the album overrunning).

It's even more excessive for the fact that it would involve going on my own twice as well (since the only other Beth Orton fans I know are Matt Watkins, who is too useless and lazy to go to London, and Justin and Amy, who can't really afford to go to London because they're talking about scary things like mortgages). I don't mind going to gigs on my own - I long ago decided I'd rather do that than miss out on gigs because no-one else wanted to go - but twice in two nights does seem to be going a little too far.

Speaking of gigs, I'm seeing Regina Spektor at the Zodiac on Thursday. It figures that she'd play here after I went to the effort of going all the way to Birmingham to see her. Oh well, she was excellent live and will be well worth seeing again.

Wow. This is really good. Three-and-a-half years is far too long to have waited for a new Beth Orton album.
