Aaron Hotchner stared at the midnight blue satin dress hanging in far right side of Spencer Reid’s closet. He had been hunting for one of his white button down shirts that he had left at Spencer’s a couple if weeks ago, and instead had found this. It was a long, empire waist gown with gauzy panels and cap sleeves. It was very long and very narrow meant for someone tall and skinny. He recognized the name on the label as a company Haley had often wanted clothing from.
“Spence?” He called out, questioning.
He waited until Spencer had stepped into his bedroom before holding out the dress.
“Is there something you want to tell me?” It was hard to keep the humor out of his voice as Spencer’s face flushed.
“I can explain?” Spencer’s voice rose at the end turning the statement into a question.
“Are you asking me or telling me?” Aaron ran a hand down the smooth material.
Spencer chuckled nervously.
“I bought it a couple of months ago after the Amanda/Adam case. I had been doing research to try to bring Adam back and had hit a wall. I was frustrated and desperate. I thought that maybe trying to get into Amanda’s head would give me insight. I ordered the dress online and Lila emailed me a how-to video she made with her stylish for make up tips for me. I dressed up, did my hair and make up and went out, hoping for insight.” Spencer leaned against the doorframe and stuck his hands in his pockets.
“Wait, you left the apartment and went out in public wearing a dress? When?” Aaron shifted from amused to aroused so fast his head spun. His reaction puzzled him but for some reason the idea of his beautiful lover, clad in a satin dress, in public was delicious.
Spencer smiled at him. “It was the week you and Jack were in South Carolina visiting with Haley’s parents. I passed, actually. I got more numbers that night from anyone then I ever have before. I threw them all out of course.”
Aaron frowned. It wasn’t fair that other people had seen his lover dressed like that. He tried to find a delicate way to ask Spencer and couldn’t.
Spencer eyed him and smirked. “Maybe one day, if you are very, very, good. Now put it back and come to the table, dinner is ready.” The trouble of having a profile as a lover was he saw everything.
Aaron reluctantly put the dress back giving the soft satin one last stroke and promised to push it out of his mind.
*******
Some time later
Aaron sat at the bar in his brother’s restaurant. After two years of learning in New York, Sean had returned to D.C ad had taken a job as a sous chef at the Elm Room, an upscale, exclusive, expensive restaurant that was impossible to get into unless you knew someone. Fortunately, Aaron knew someone. He didn’t eat here often, it was a little expensive for his taste and Spencer didn’t tend to care where they ate when they went out but Aaron liked to show his support for his brother’s career choice.
Spencer had been in Baltimore on a consult and had called Aaron earlier in the day asking of he wanted to eat out that night. Aaron agreed and had asked if the Elm room was okay. After a moments hesitation Spencer had said yes and they made plans to meet at the bar at eight.
It was now ten after eight according to Aaron’s watch. Spencer wasn’t always late but sometimes he could get caught up in something and would lose track of time.
“Is this seat taken?” A quiet, high voice asked softly.
Aaron turned to the side and was about to gestured for the woman to sit when something made him freeze.
The figure was tall and thin, dressed in a long black coat, a hint of blue peeking out from behind the hem. The woolen coat was fitted, with a flared bottom, and large buttons marching up the front.
Aaron dragged his eyes up lingering just slightly at the open collar that framed milky, smooth, skin with a contrasting dark blue ribbon choker with a blue pendent nestled right at the hollow of the pale throat.
Aaron, mouth dry, forced himself to look up into Spencer’s amused eyes. His make up was light but the eyeliner and shadow made Spencer’s already expressive eyes glow. The light pink blush highlighted Spencer’s high cheekbones and softened them. His lipstick was just on the pink side of neutral and the liner emphasized the shape. His shoulder length hair fell in soft waves with the front right lock pulled back and held in place with a plain blue barrette.
“Buy me a drink?” Spencer asked coyly and slid onto the stool and sat demurely staring at Aaron though mascara heavy lashes.
“Are you out of your mind, Spencer?” Aaron hissed, panic gathering in his stomach. He pushed it down and glanced around the room to see if there was anyone they knew was here.
“Lila, please. And I'm only following the glorious tradition set down by our illustrious founder." He reached over and across Aaron, showing off his painted blue fingernails, and took Aaron’s glass. He brought it to his lips and sipped, leaving a perfect lipstick print on the rim.
“Those claims were never substantiated. We need to leave, now.” Spencer looked hurt and stood.
“Aaron, look at me again. Do you think anyone in here would associate a well-dressed woman with clumsy frumpy Spencer Reid? I pass, Aaron. Sean never has time to come out to our table. It’s a new Maître d. No one will know. Now come, before we lose our reservation.” He held out his arm for Aaron to take.
Aaron stared at Spencer again and stood, taking his arm, as if he were a woman.
“What happened to my shy, innocent, doctor?” he asked softly as he escorted Spencer to the maître d’.
“He grew up and fell in love with a man who likes a bit of kink.” Spencer smiled coquettishly, armed draped over Aaron’s arm.
Aaron flushed a bit and led them to the podium. “Reservation for Hotchner.”
The Maître d gave a tiny smile. “Ah Mr. Hotchner. Right this way. Your brother recommends the catch of the day. Here is your table. May I take your coat?” He turned to Spencer.
Spencer smiled and went to unbutton his coat. Aaron stood behind his chair and watched as the blue gown he had seen in Spencer’s closet was revealed.
It looked even better on Spencer than it had on the hanger. The gauze folds fell from the gathered empire waist giving Spencer the illusion of slight curves. The gathering of the fabric at the neckline gave Spencer a hint of a chest, nothing buxom but enough so that he wasn’t completely flat chested.
Aaron swallowed and took the coat check tag from the maître d before pulling Spencer’s chair out. “You look stunning. I should have said so before. I’m sorry.” He lightly brushed his fingers over Spencer’s shoulder as he pushed the chair in.
He sat across the table and just stared. Spencer was right. If Aaron hadn’t known Spencer, if he hadn’t been as attuned to Spencer as he was, he wouldn’t have known that it was a man sitting in front of him.
Aaron reached over, grasped one of Spencer’s hands and held it from across the table.

Sean Hotchner rubbed his head against his shoulder and breathed. The kitchen was loud and crowded. It was hot, tiring work and he loved every minute of it.
“Hey, Sean? Your brother’s here.” Sean looked at Brian, who was the headwaiter.
“I know. He called me earlier, I set up the reservation for him and his partner.” He was puzzled that Brian would take the time to tell him. Aaron and Spencer came in every so often. He appreciated that his brother both supported his career and was comfortable enough to take his boyfriend to the restaurant where Sean worked.
Brian fidgeted. “So, he normally comes in with that tall guy, the doctor. His partner, you said?”
Sean nodded confused at the man’s hesitance. “Brian, I have two meat specials and three fish specials to finish in the next couple of minutes, and I’m sure you have a table that needs assistance. What is it?”
“He’s not with the doctor. He is sitting at the table with a lovely woman. I thought you should know.”
Sean frowned. Aaron had said he was coming here with a date. He wouldn’t cheat to begin with, and he wouldn’t bring someone else to this restaurant when he knew Sean was working.
“Thanks, Brian.” He turned to Max, the head chef. “Hey, Max? We have a lull coming up, can I take a minute to say hi to my brother?” Max was utterly focused on his dish and just waved a hand at him.
Sean finished the dishes he was working on, washed his hands and moved to the small window in the door that lead to dining room.
Peering through it, he could see Aaron sitting at a table with a rather stunning woman, who was not Spencer. He could have passed it off as friends meeting for dinner if his brother hadn’t been holding her hand on the table. What on earth was going on?
Sean slipped off his chef’s jacket before pushing through the door and causally strolling over to the table.
“Aaron, there was a lull in the kitchen so I thought I would come over and say hi. Wanna introduce me to your friend?” He stared at the woman. She looked oddly familiar.
Aaron looked startled before he schooled his features into a neutral expression. He also released the woman’s hand and pulled his arm back to his side of the table.
“Sean. Hey. They let you out of the kitchen?” Sean was too familiar with his brother’s attempts at redirection to fall for it.
“Yeah they cut the chain tethering me to stove. You going to introduce me?”
Aaron stared at Sean for a second. “Sean, this is Lila. Lila, my brother Sean.”
Sean didn’t reach out his hand to shake hers but turned back to Aaron. “And where is Spencer tonight? Does he know where you are…”
“Sean.” A slender hand topped with blue painted tips rested on his forearm.
Sean let the hand turn him around and for the first time really studied the woman. It took him a second before…
“Oh. My. God!” It was Spencer. The pretty woman sitting at a table with his brother was Spencer.
“Lila, Lila Archer. It’s nice to meet you.” Spencer released his forearm and held out his hand, staring up at him from under fluttering lashes.
“Lila Archer, really?” Morgan had gleefully shared the tale of Spencer’s dip in the pool with the actress with Sean at a cook out at Aaron’s not long ago.
“What’s going on?” He turned back to Aaron.
“I would say that it's none of your business however I know you wouldn't accept that. I promise to explain later. Come over for brunch this weekend and we will explain.” Sean nodded in response, slowly not sure he really wanted to know.
“Okay. I have to get back to the kitchen. Enjoy your dinner. I’ll see you this weekend.” He studied them again before turning back to the kitchen.
His staid, boring, stickler for the rules, older brother who worked for the FBI, was out on a date with his boyfriend, who was dressed as a woman. You couldn’t make this shit up. Sean shook his head and slid his jacket back on. He had meals to cook.
